Default 1994 968 Timing Belt Kit

Does someone have part numbers for the tensioners, rollers, water pump, and belts

I got a kit and I'm trying to verify the part #'s before doing the job.

Thanks,

Glen

Did you get a "oem" kit or did you buy it from a Porsche dealer? The reason I ask is that the ones from Porsche last a lot longer. I know of a few guys who bought an "oem" belt and it failed within 10-15K. Stay away from non Porsche belts. Yeah, they are more money but if we worry about every nickle and dime, I think we are into the wrong cars.

A non dealer balance belt failed on me after 8K miles, it is worth while to buy the factory belts.

Are the belts the issue or the rollers and tensioners? I can always get better belts to go with the other stuff.

A friend also told me that there are Kevlar belts available that last twice as long as the Porsche belts, is this true and does the cost out weigh the benefit.

Thanks,

Glen

Glen, the factory belts do have kevlar in them. Anyone who has had a belt fail will tell you the shrouding that occurs is not fun. I would not risk using non Porsche parts on my car and would recommend you the same. Why take chances for a few $$$.

Since I'm now shopping for a kit and reading the posts, I noted 968gene's parts list and wanted to ask if the thermostat part number is correct?

My 968 parts catalogue show the thermostat as being Part No. 944.106.019.00.

Also, the alternator belt and power steering belt are Part Nos. 999.192.299.50 and 999.192.236.50, respectively.

My car has 105k on the clock and has been well-maintained. I have a couple of questions for those experienced with this task:

How likely is it that the timing belt tensioner will need replaced?

Are the Lasa brand water pumps (sold by Pelican) reliable? Can't find an OEM pump anywhere.

The tensioner is less than $100 last I checked.
When you pull the tensioner out look to see if there is any seepage or oil around the piston. If so replace.

Given the mileage, if it is not listed in your records, I would replace it.

I purchased a complete set of replacement belts and tensioners last autumn before putting the car into winter hibernation: they're mfd. by Continental. I hope this is OEM. I didn't buy from a dealer.

Conti isn't OEM... but I've had good experiences with Conti.

Where is Bruce now-a-days?

I decided to buy OEM parts for the rollers and tensioners, but I bought Goodyear timing and drive belts (online from AutoZone, no less), and a Lasa brand water pump from Pelican.

I am getting a quote from Sunset for my parts.....is there anything else that I would need besides the above? Just curious, but do you actually replace 5 camshaft seals during the timing belt job?

Thanks!

at 61 k miles, my Gates belts were absolutely pristine.

who's to say they couldn't have gone double the distance.

I'd not have lost a wink of sleep, but Mr. Kennedy was already down there replacing the dead pump.

Paul - Gene's list is for a comprehensive T belt service where you intent to touch and replace everything. Some of the part numbers have changed but Sunset will know which ones. A word of warning. I've done several 968 belt replacements including 2 this month. Part # 944 105 241 02 is indeed shown in the katalog but is NOT used in our cars. Also the pivot pin for the tensioner lever in the earlier cars has been updated to the newer version (944 105 170 04). I've yet to talk to anyone who has personally had one fail but I've heard the rumors. I suggest ordering the newer version with the 2 o-ring seals (999 707 078 40) if your car has the old style. Problem is you won't know which version you have until after disassembly.

Not all of the seals listed are labeled correctly. There is one crankshaft front seal, one camshaft front seal, 2 balance shaft front seals and the clear sealing washers (944 105 321 00) that sandwich between the seal spacer sleeves and the balance shafts. Go onto the katalog link and start looking. Also some of the items listed require a quantity of more than one.
