I remember reading that Porsche invited a group of automotive journalists to view the new 968 in 1991, prior to its US release. They were impressed by the car itself but when the factory indicated that the suggested retail price would be in the mid-$40k range, they balked. That price was a lot higher than the twin turbo 300zx, RX-7, and others at the time, for what was a N/A 4 cylinder car.
Consequently, Porsche introduced the car for 1992 officially at $39,995 (or there-abouts) which was actually LESS than the outgoing 944S2 model. The sub- $40k was a BASE price, with most having sticker prices of around $45k with options.
Many in the US were sold, however, for far less than sticker. Even magazines at the time were saying this. With the state of the economy and a market flush with strong competitors, 968's were going out the door for as low as about $35k if you tried to bargin.

What's that in TODAY's Dollars?
A very nicely optioned Cayman or a Carrera with Sport Chrono and not much else.

I spoke to an insurance company yesterday that said they would provide $31,000 "classic car" replacement value insurance of a new condition Porsche 968.

While on that thought, remember the changes in manufacturing/sourcing going on at that time-the 993 came in at around 10 grand less than the 964, even though it was radically improved.

I would compare "2006" 968 prices with that of a new Boxster or slightly below. 968 was the entry level Porsche in 1995, the Boxster the entry level Porsche now. Not just straight inflation.
Base sticker on an '89 944 Turbo was 44.9k. Bast sticker on my fathers '94 968 coupe was 39 something, IIRC. So the trend of offering more for less from Porsche had already started somewhat 10 years ago.

Wow Jim, you have the car I wish my dad had bought. His '94 6M Coupe stickered at $49k and change w/o M030 or LSD.
Has all the bling bling leather and stereo stuff though
