964 is a normally aspirated 911 of the years 89-94 if i'm not mistaken.

One of the best handling cars ever made vs a Beetle on steriods? Now a Flachbau 964 Turbo I could see, but a regular 964 is kinda boring looking, not any faster in the real world than a 968, more expensive to buy and maintain-but they do have an appeal to the Porsche 'purist' who may look askance at a 4cyl waterpumper. Coming from a 951 you may be disappointed at the 968's urge, but toss a Promax chip on the car and put on some springs and mo30 sways and you'll have a face hurt by smiling.

964's can be a great bargain in the 911 range. For track use, arguably easier to modify suspension (full coil-overs, no torsion bars).

The 944 series as a whole are very softly sprung. Contrast this with most 911's (regardless of genre) and you may see what I mean.

I did consider a 964 when I was hunting the 968. At the end of the day, I really like the 944 series feel and practical nature. But the sound of that 3.6 ticking just behind you was mighty tempting...

Ultimately, a matter of personal preference as each can be found at a good price given enough time and patience.

The 964 is not any faster than a 968? Who are you trying to kid??? (Stock 964 vs stock 968, right? Are you comparing a modified 968 vs a stock C2 Tiptronic Cabriolet???)
Stock vs stock:
0-60 the 964 is ahead by 2 car lengths.
0-100, the 964 is ahead by 5 or 6 car lengths.
0-140? Forget it! The 968 is way, way back!
I've owned 2 964's and 6 968's so far, and there is absolutely no comparison!
Now if you're talking about racing on a track, it's a different story.

Is there anything else that can be said about a 968 (besides the fact that it handles good and has a good A/C system?)
Is it cheap to maintain? No.
Does it hold it's value better than a 911? No.
Does it hold it's value better than a 951? Close, but no.
Does it cost a sh1tload to get any serious power? YES!
I see that 911 envy (which turns to ridiculous hatred of "all things 911") around here all the time, and it's pretty pathetic IMO.
Hmmm, I guess 911 owners are really stupid, huh?

Nicest part of a 964, compared to the 968, is that you can get them in the most amazing combination available...specifically, 4WD Cabrio!

Now that's what I call a Daily Driver!

I guess as much, but would be good to have a bit more descriptive explanation of the difference in handling between the 2. I guess my question is how far off the 964 handling is compared to the 968?

I'll put on my Bendict Arnold hat here and say the 964 is a more track worthy car. The 911 line in general has been raced for so long that the development and support for it is difficult to match.
I also think that the handling characteristics are slightly overblown. Yes, the 944/968 cars are very neutral and well-balanced - but any track car with a sorted suspension will hopefully handle the way you set it up to.
For a real dual-purpose street/track car, the 968's interior space is pretty amazing. Just load her up and go the to track. Not as easy in a 911.

Good luck - I feel both are tremendous cars, so ultimately you can't really go wrong!

Depends of course if the 964 is a C2 or C4...........
And the skill of the driver.
Either way, the handling of the 964 is not as neutral and/or idiot-proof as the 968, but for a skilled driver, there's no comparison in their choice between the 2 cars.
The 968 has 50/50 weight distribution, while the 964 C2 has somewhere around 37/63, and the 964 C4 around 40/60.
The 911 has been misunderstood by many, which doesn't bother us 911 owners one bit.
Not as much skill is required with tracking the 968, so it's a great choice for a limited budget. (But then again so is a $3000 Miata with a $2000 supercharger kit).
$ is the major factor here, and if anyone disagrees, it's just further proof!

Damian - how much is a promax chip and how much hp and torque does it add?

Yup, 0-whatever the 964 wins. I usually like to turn left or right at some point when out driving, and that's when a 964 will get passed, unless Walter Rohrl or Hurley Haywood is behind the wheel. The lift off oversteer wasn't really dialed out until the 993, although a 964 C4 does plow quite a bit.

Promax chip gives about 14 hp and 8lb/ft tq over stock, about $145,
