Default WTB: Black 968 Coupe Door Panels with M490 Option (10-speaker)

I'm looking for black door panels for a 968 coupe with the 3 speakers in the door. Must be in good condition (no tears or rips). Will be going on my 1987 951. I'm doing the ugprade for the stereo and for the look. UPDATE: I want the panels with the hi-fi option -- either with the speaker above the map pocket or both under the armrest (total 3 speakers in the doors).

Thanks!

Actually they have 2 speakers in the arm rest and one tweeter up top on the door panel. The other two speakers on each side are in the rear. This system, depending on your current setup of OEM/aftermarket equipment, may require two amplifiers. My 93 has one under each seat.
Try 20th St Parts in Phoenix.

Or one amplifier and a crossover network.

there was an option of 3 speakers in the door - he is right - the extra speaker was a mid and fit in the blank space behind the grille - you can see where it went if you take the panel apart

you might be able to open up that blank space and install the mid in the 2 speaker panel

yes, the "hi-fi" stereo on 968's has three seperate grills on the door(above and below window switches and under armrest) . . . regular 968 stereo has two, which is like the 944 "hi-fi" systems (above window switches and under armrest)

Are you looking for the "hi-fi" panels?

From what I understood, the M490 option is the 10-speaker option -- also called the hi-fi option.. It had one 5.5" driver and one 4" midrange under the armrest, and a tweeter up by the window switched. These 6 speakers (3 on each side) plus a 6.5" and midrange in the back on each side (2 on each side) made 10 speakers total.

Is this correct?

Here is the door panel and window sticker from my father's '94 coupe. Option list clearly says "hi-fi 10 speaker system" Note the three grills on the door panel. Is this what you're looking for? A standard 968 door panel should be much easier to find.

hmm... so what all speakers do those panels have in them? I thought the 10 speaker system was 2 under the armrest and 1 tweeter up high, like on the late 944's with M490 option...

what do normal 968 panels look like as far as speakers go?

I think they are pretty much the same. My '88 944 NA had the 10-speaker option and the speaker set up seemed to be the same. The '88 had a rectangular / trapazoidal cover for the tweeter.

The map pockes in the 968 are deeper (a lot) and the top near the glass has a contour to accomodate one's elbow.

It's actually not a bad system if you add a powered subwoofer (I have an 8" powered Bazooka) to augment the low end. Not loud enough for many kids, but fine for my tastes.

Hmm, that's strange. On the sticker underneath my hood it says I have the Hi-Fi option, but I don't think I have that speaker in the map pocket. I'll have to check that when I get back home.

I have option 490 and do not have that speaker in the pocket. The sound system schematic shows 1 tweeter up high on the door, two speakers in the panel, and two in the rear X 2 = 10.

However, the schematic does not show two amps and my 93 definitely has two - one under each seat.

I sometimes think that 968s were constructed with whatever was on hand the day the car was built. Some amps have 928 part numbers. Mine had 944 part numbers. Crazy Germans.

I posted the schematic in a pdf on 968Forums.com

there is a space in the plastic housing right next to the other driver behind the large grille for a mid - i am suspecting that there were 2 different installation methods - one as shown and one with it down there

here's a question - 10 speakers - 0k - 6 in the doors - that means 4 in back? what did they put back there for that?

the 4 in the back were a 6 1/2" and a midrange (according to the stereo faq) but I don't know what size midrange was used.

I've also heard some say they used tweeters in the back with the 6 1/2's, but I hoe not... that would make the sound too bright coming from the rear and you generally don't want that. you want your soundstage in front of you, without high tweeter sounds distracting behind you.
