Default 6-Speed Question, 968

My Audi TT 6-speed has the same shift pattern as the '94 968 that I just bought. However, on the Audi, when I pull the shift lever to the left (along the center of the "H"), I have to push the shifter down and up to the left to get into reverse. It takes effort. On the 968, if I'm not careful, I'll sometimes accidently go into reverse when trying to shift into first from a stop. Is this just a matter of me needing to get more used to the 968 trans or is there a shifter spring somewhere that's weak and makes it a little harder to discern the breakpoint between 1st and Reverse...or?

Thanks,

Harvey

Hmm, I use to have the same problem, but it went away with practice.

My personal experience is that shifting into 1st only requires a very gentle tug left and up. Going into reverse requires a bit more force. But I do have the 944Racing SS Kit installed, which makes the difference between 1 and R much more distinct.

BTW, I like your 928!

You'll get used to it, to the point where you won't think about it anymore. I remember I almost backed into someone at a light when I first had my coupe.

That is a flaw in our tranaxles. There is no lockout for reverse. Most transaxles come with this. I think this one looks like an overlook of some sort or maybe lockouts were not common back then.
In either case, I think we all can attest to your error. Like everyone said, it will be a no brainer in no time.

The only rear issue I have with 2nd to 1st shifts is during an autocross. You just have to remember to get the shift done before the turn and don't rush it or it will take a lot longer to do it twice.

The drag is having to advise anyone that drives the car to be very careful in this area. I really kinda freaked out the spouse on this point. First-time 968 driving and toll booths are a bad mix...

actually, very few transmissions come with a "reverse lockout" - i've never had this as a problem - most designers assume that the gap, and the driver, are enough to handle it - it's a pretty obvious distinct seperation - the VW has a push down lockout, but reallly beyond that, with most cars, its just a spacing issue - this is the case with ours - very normal - no design flaw - try 2 fingers instead of manhandling the shifter

I had a Volvo 740 Turbo wagon which had a collar on the shift lever, which needed to be pulled up, to allow the shifter to continue its travel to reach the reverse gear.

It was absolutely scarry in the snow, but a real hoot in Auto-X's! It was the ultimate sleeper back in the 1980's...4 speed with an overdrive button on the shifter for 5th gear.

Actually, for me it's hard to make the mistake of putting the shifter in reverse instead of 1st in a 968, since I had a '89 911, in which I made that mistake way too many times!

d993,

28k miles on a '95 968!!!!!! What a deal!!! (unless you paid out the nose...even then...that's a great opportunity to get a great car that was made in a small quantity and few people get an opportunity to buy a car like that). Congratulations!

Thanks.................Actually, I didn't pay out the nose, but the next buyer might...........
The last low mileage (58k) black/black 968 I sold on eBay had 142 people on my "watchlist", and over 7000 views by the time it sold.
