Default CA Emissions

I am looking to purchase a 968 from the east coast, and I wanted to know if any of you have had previous experience with this. Will I have a problem getting the car to pass emissions in CA? Are there any items that I must add to the car (converter etc)?

Any help is appreciated.

The cars run very clean, and I believe were all the cars were 50 state equipped.

My (now gone) 968 was originally from New Jersey and apparently passed CA emissions just fine with no problems.. I think Damian is right that they were all 50 state equipped.

So called 49 state cars must have at least 7500 miles to be registered in CA. The EPA complaince sticker should say all state complaince or not. All recent cars are 50 state. Not sure when they changed. I live in CA, land of the smog nannies

My car just came from TN by way of MI. The cars are 50 state legal and mine passed without incident. The car hadn't had a fresh set of plugs, wires, cap etc since new (27,000 miles ago) and the oil needed changing. You should have zero problems. Keep in mind that you have a limited time to register the car once it hits Ca soil. Also keep in mind not all auto shippers are created equal. Good luck, these are wonderful cars.

Default CA Emissions

I am concerned that if I purchase this car (94 coupe), that I will not be able to smog it with the emissions standards for CA. The seller had mentioned that his car may not be 49 state legal. I will call DMV, but the chance of getting someone on the phone that has a "clue" may be a challenge. I really want this car, and would like to think I will be fine. I prefer to make certain there are no problems getting the car smogged before I buy it.

Has anyone had a problem at all that can share?

Thank you

If you had a 968 in a good state of tune I wouldn't worry about it passing smog here at all.

I just smogged my 951 a week ago for the first time. My 86Turbo is considered a gross polluter here in Cal. and has to go to a "Test Only" facility. Here's what was on my car during the test: K26-8, Welt chips, shimmed wastegate, 3-bar FPR, and open element air filter. It passed with flying colors at idle and 25mph test. The 15 mph test was very, very close though on NOx and CO. I don't have the printout so I might have the abbreviations wrong.

NO 1125 ppm allowed-1115 ppm measured
CO 955 ppm allowed-940 ppm measured.

I heated the cat up really well first and the shop ran a huge fan over the intercooler during the test. It seems many of the turbos run considerably off the mark for the 15 mph test but clean elsewhere. Anyone know why? I suspect the generic chips have more to do with it plus 1st gear (2150 rpm) for 15 mph isn't mapped correctly. Anyone else have problems with the 15 mph test?

Default CA Emissions

Thank you all for the information.

I have decided to purchase the car after calling DMV. They onformed me that as long as the car has a federal ID, and it passed the state emissions requirements I will be fine. I cant wait to pick it up!!!

Default CA Emissions

The car was purchased and driven back across country (2,400 miles) to CA. I am the owner of my first 968, and very pleased with the purchase. The car passed emissions without a problem, and there were no previous records of the car being smogged in CA.

I am one happy 968 owner!

I am in Orange County (Irvine area). Do most of you belong to the PCA / POC?

Let me know when a group of you are getting together, maybe I can make it out to join you..

Thanks!
