Question DIY Oil Change in 968

I'm quite adept at changing the oil and filter in my 944S2 and 951 but have never done a 968.

We plan on changing the oil and filter in Pitou's car soon, and before tackling the job I thought I'd check here for any caveats from you pros.

*I assume the 968 has a one-piece engine protection pan, like the 944S2?
*Any differences in accessing the filter and drain plug?
*Is the oil capacity 6 to 7 liters with filter like the 944/951?

Your advice is appreciated.

Should be the same procedure as on your other cars-Pulling the pans will help you not get oil everywhere after the change. There are 2-one under the front bumper cover and 1 under the oil pan area. I put in 6 quarts of oil and check the level with the dipstick. Good luck!

As Steve said, exact same. Neither one should have the aluminum heat shield that is on the turbo's.

if you are talking about the lower metal shield that is behind the oil pan, and meets up with the center plastic pan, it is also found on 92s - seen it twice now

Make that four times, mine has it and the car that Rudy sold Dave Swanson in Chicago has it as well.

Hmm, typical 1992 Model year stuff. Seems like they carried over almost everything which would mean the S2's should have that shield as well.

lots of odd stuff on the 92 - ever take a look at the water neck, the upper hose or the intake manifold? all different than the 93

Pitou's car is a U.S. spec MY 92, so I should expect 2 engine protection pans, then?

Yes. You can take them both off together.

Hello again,

We just did the oil change and everything was pretty much identical to my 951, only the 968 has these funny "side ducts" sandwiched between the batwing and the front engine protection pan on the wheel liner sides. 944 cars don't have these.

After we had removed everything, taken off the filter, drained the oil, replaced the drain plug and washer, and were buttoning up the pans again, I mistakenly used one of the 10mm pan bolts to reattach one of those "ducts" and busted the metal support tab that was only meant to take the thinner phillips screw.

We ended up having to go look for a replacement tab which made the relatively straightforward oil change take longer than it should have, but in the end we got one that worked out well. We put about 6 liters of 5W-50 Mobil1 synthetic in the car, and it fired right up.

Awesome. Glad to hear it worked out well. I haven't heard of 5w 50 mobil one, only 15w 50- is that a European thing?

Yes, AFAIK it's only available on the Euro market.

Porsche now fits Mobil1 0W-40 in its new cars from factory, but after asking around I decided that grade was a bit on the low side for our cars built with higher tolerances than now.
