Default LSD option

My '94 968 coupe does not list M220 on the option tag. Bummer. However, I heard that for 94-95 the LSD was standard equipment. Is this true or just wishful thinking?

Thanks,
-Ken

Wishful thinking, alas. Where did you get this misinformation?

Ken, as Damian stated its not true at all. Damian's cab did not have it and I know of a few more that don't have LSD and are either 94-95. Lots of mis-information from other boards at times.

Ken, on the option tag it would be listed as 220 but I think you would have figured it out if that was on it.

As Damian and Raj have said the majority of 968s do not have LSD. I am very happy that I was lucky enough to find one with LSD!

I've got it now, though. There are a couple of vendors that sell units you can install, all in the $1200 range IIRC.

And keep in mind that the 92 968 LSD is different from the 93-95. The 93-95 is the torsen design (torque sensing) where the 92 is a ZF unit (I believe). As mention by others, lots of misinformation on this subject elsewhere. I don't have it either. It is even rarer on cabs.

I am going to possibly wrongly expand on that but I believe that both the clutch (ZF) and torsen units were available in 92 and that they may have different option codes.

Thanks for the info. I had heard this from another 968 owner while at a pca autocross this past summer.

Damian, what does IIRC stand for?

Thanks,
-Ken

Ken,

My car is a '95 and it had '220' option which at the time meant Torsen style LSD.

Well, that's a new one. Do you know the two codes? I have only seen 220. And the documentation from the time indicates it was a hard cutover for the 93 model year but you never know. How can you tell which LSD you have? Does it say so on the transaxle? We could ask someone with a late 92 to take a look.

I've been told the ZF is a hell of a lot noisier.

Jeff, I have a copy of the 94 Porsche Fact Book which is a little black book that the sales guys carried around. It has two option codes "M 220 Locking differential" and "M 221 Porsche-locking differential".

The Rennlist option decoder http://registry.rennlist.com/optioncode/optioncode.asp and this website also lists the 221 option code http://www.cantonia.com/option_codes...944OptionCodes

I assume that the Torsen unit is the 220 and the ZF (clutch) type manufactured by Porsche is the 221. LSD for a 92 tiptronic that I looked at was code P08.

Interesting. Well, this looks like a job for a survey. I'll post it on the "other" board and see what we come up with. i have never seen a 221.

According to "Excellence Was Expected", '94 - '95 LSD are Torsen.

Not sure whether Torsen unit is available as an option in '93.
