THE 3.0 Liter Turbo Thread
#16
Scott, it is running both. The thing with the GT30 is that its not a plug and play setup but that is no reason it can't be done. Chris used a ingenious way of getting cooling to the turbo without the turbo pump and all. He welded NPT fittings to the coolant pipe and ran the water through them using steel braided lines. Very race car like stuff.
I am so tempted to run it at 1.3 bar cause thats what Chris planned on running when he spec'd the turbo. He was estimating 465rwhp at 1.3 bar. I might just throw in some race gas one day and go for it .

Ack! Remind me not run against you for pink slips... lol
I am afraid I may have to wrap up my 951 project so that I can start in on a 968 turbo, that sounds like way too much fun to pass up. How streetable are you finding it Raj? Jay, I am assuming that youare planning on running on the street with yours too. Any targets for rwhp and torque for your car?
Regards,

Scott, the car drives like a stock 951, or even better like a 968 when off boost. There is plenty of torque from the bottom and tons of power up top. With my setup, I am running a hotter cam so I have a lumpier than stock idle. Besides that, its completely driveable around town and this is a 70% locking diff.

My conversion was just finished on my 94 968 cab a couple months ago. It is now a 3.0 Turbo using the 2.7l head. The new turbo top down driving experience is like no other. I would love to see more of these conversions. Feel free to ask any questions and I will be more than happy to try and answer them. Raj, do you have any idea where I can find the OEM Turbo S dual hood latch setup so I can mount the intercooler without using hood pins. Thanks, Tate

Raj, your only about 8 hours drive time from me...7 porsche time. we should work on getting some of the guys together and we can drool over each others cars. I would love to meet as many member as possible. The drive is definitly not out of reach for me. Tate

That would be a great idea. I am up for a roadtrip. It would be awesome to be able to see your car in person. You should have snapped some pics if my latch mechanism at Hershey. I will try to take some cloaseups for you and Jay.

Darn it... I was working on the Gen'l Lee yesterday and the only thing I could think about was how much more fun a 465 rwhp 968 would be...
Jay, make a good list and take lots of pictures, as I have a feeling thatI will be going down your path shortly.

Scott, that would be 465rwhp at 1.3 bar. I am only running 1 bar, so the numbers should be down. I didn't want to try running higher boosts on pump gas. We are trying to get a dyno day together so lets see what she will do on a dynojet.

For those running 3 liter turbos, do any one you have o-ringed heads/cylinders? My block is at the machine shop now and I forgot to discuss that with him. (Yes, raj, it had taken exactly this long.) --Tom

Tom, in my case I neither have the head or the block O'ringed. It would only be necessary if I was planning on running insane amounts of boost. Once you get this thing going, you will see how nice it is even with 1 bar.
Also, I think the 1st time around it is better to use a stock HG as you want that to be your weak link. They are cheap and relatively easy to replace compared to some of the other tasks. Once things are sorted out, its a different story.

I think the head gasket as the weak link probably does have merit. It is the cheapest form of insurance, and there's something to be said for that.
But, we decided to get the head O-ringed anyway. The head was off, and the engine was apart so it was an easy thing to do at the time.
