Question 968 M030 rears Koni's #2

Hi,

Quick one about 968 M030 rear Konis.

Pelican Parts have part number E-333-032-03 listed as being for a 968. According to their technical guy, who I emailed, this is the same as Porsche part number 944.333.032.03 (968 M030 rear Koni adjustables).

The thing that is worrying me is the price... they seem too cheap at $178 each!
Can this be right? I'm worried the body won't have the helper spring seat on the body or something!...

See page here. Dampers at bottom:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...suspen_pg1.htm

I'm in the UK so have no experience of buying from Pelican Parts, was hoping someone can perhaps back up the fact that these really are indeed 968 M030 rear Koni's?

Many thanks,
Matt.

I have never ordered from Pelican but frequently experience excellent service from http://www.paragon-products.com . They have a large suspension inventory including Bilstiens that are not yet listed on their website and a relationship with Koni that allows them to offer special products. They even have 968 Cup car rear coilovers.

Hi - thanks for reply Bruce,

I have contacted Jason @ Paragon... he certainly gave good advice and knew his stuff but his price quoted for new dampers (shocks) was $290 a piece... so obviously I'm pretty keen to find out whether the $178 quoted on the Pelican site is for the same unit!...

It may well be that it'll work out best for me to go for the rebuild option over here in the UK anyway. Have yet to confirm prices with the Koni rebuilder.

Cheers,
Matt

I have purchased from Pelican with no problem, but let me warn you that they recommended aftermarket motor mounts for my 968, saying they have had no problems in over 2 years of sellling them. They cost a bunch less than OEM. Well they feel like billet mounts. I'd have gladly paid the extra for OEM. Now I have to do the job again. This is not to say that I have had any problem with Pelican, but do not get aftermarket motor mounts.

While on the subject of dissatisfaction, do not buy anything from ARBOSPEED on EBAY. This is a fraudulent seller. I thought I'd get a fuel filter because the price was right, but for 3 bucks more I could have ordered it from Paragon and already installed it, along with the DME relay and check valve that I got from them. Instead, I'm waiting 3 weeks for this schmuck to send something he probably will never send. When using EBAY, read the comments about the seller before committing. I recommend buying online from one of the many reputable companies that does not drop ship.

I would think the price is just for cartridge alone. The rear shock is a total of atleast 3-4 pieces so I would assume the price is for the cartridge. Have you considered calling Sunset Porsche. They are by far the cheapest on Porsche original parts.

Raj:

When you say Sunset Porsche, is it the Porsche dealer in Beaverton, Oregon?

Hi,

Thanks for the info Raj. Haven't tried them... I'm over in the UK, which is probably why I've never used them :-) Might give them a try though.
At the moment I am planning to get them rebuilt. The rough quote from a place over here in the UK (Sportsline Suspension - Koni approved rebuilder) is
going to be around £60 each for a basic rebuild.

Going to get the fronts done at the same time too... may as well they could probably do with it... 10 years old now..

cheers,
Matt.

The 968M030 rear shock is made up of a standard adjustable Koni Sport Yellow shock, a upper spring perch and a set of springs. You may want to verify prices for all three pieces vs. what additional monies may be required to do something like: http://www.paragon-products.com/prod...rearcupkit.htm which has external bump and rebound adjustment, adjustable ride height and is offered with a variety of spring rates.

Matt,

I have had no problems whatsoever with dealing with Paragon from here in the UK.

My rebuilt 3 way front konis are excellant, I would strongly recommend that rebuild for the fronts.

£60 sounds really cheap for a rebuild. I would get a full spec on it and compare it with the Paragon rebuild spec, that I am sure Jason willl gladly provide.

Didn't realise that the koni's for the 968 and 951 M030 were the same + springs etc.

Interesting.

Still saving up for my 3012's! oh well as least the wife has a new nice shiny cooker now :-(

Hi,

Graham - did you see the bit in a recent 911 and Porsche World mag about Bilstein rebuilds? They offer rebuilds on their units for around £50+vat or there abouts too. Seems about right to me - after all its not a big/ difficult job for someone that knows how to do it. That price was for a basic rebuild. Same valving etc etc. Would be more for making the damper 2-way adjustable etc.

cheers,
Matt.

I'd go for the cup rears from Paragon if I were you.

yeah I'm kind of undecided at the moment. The options are:
1) cup kit from Paragon @ $700

2) 2 x rebuild, 2 x new shorter stiffer springs. This option obviously a fair bit cheaper but doesn't have the adjustability of the cup kit.... tending towards this but we'll see!....
