Losing sleep over a 968
Last night I tossed and turned for a good 2 hours hours on how to get a 968 into my garage.
I'm an avid 951'er, but the lines and the 3.0l powerplant has me wanting one.
I've been looking and for $14-18k it seems like I could get my hands on a pretty good one. Ultimatly I would love to get a 968 with the M030 and LSD, but those are few and far between.
What I've got and what I want are are two different things right now.
I've thought about selling the 951 in 2 different configurations:
Option 1- Covert it back to 100% stock and sell it for around $8k (worth it)
sell off the fun parts, wheels, suspension, exhaust, ect.... for about $3.5k
Total $11.5k
Option 2- Sell the car as is and maybe get $10k seems like modded cars always go for less than they are worth.
Then sell all the misc parts floating around my garage and dip into my saving and come up with the rest.
-or-
Find a 968 owner thats boost-neglected with a thirst for a 951, and do a trade plus cash deal.
I think I've finally lost it..................

I know how you feel, Jason. I lost a lot of sleep this summer thinking about the three cars I acquired: 1993 Amazon Green 968, 1992 Black 968, and 1986 Red 951 (Ian's). After getting the 1993 968 Tip, my father liked it so much that I sold it to him. I had long wanted for him to get back into the Porsche fold, and I am so happy that he is! After I parted with it, I bought Ian's awesome 951. Even so, I kept thinking about how I would love to own a 968 6-spd. I tried to shake the notion, but it resonated in my mind until I located and bought one. You defiinitely can't go wrong with one. They are so much fun to drive, and the throttle response is fantastic! Variocam really does make a difference! Good luck with your decision and possible search.

It would be hard for you to find a 968 owner who would want to trade to a 951. The 968 is a more modern car and is tighter. Also, the demographics of 968 owners is somewhat different to some 951 owners. Usually 951 owners are DIYer while 951 owners are usually having shops do their work. What all this means is that you could find yourself a nice clean 968 a lot easier than a 951.
I would suggest turning your car back to stock and selling it that way and parting everything out. Why lose the $1.5K. Also, maybe a max of 2-3 M030 968s show up in the market every year. You just have to jump on it when one shows up.

One option might be to get a non M030 968 and then upgrade to M030. The parts are available and you may even be able to upgrade to better (newer) than M030 components. Dan deGrunchy installed all of the M030 components to his 968. He went to the dealer and bought them all. He told me the cost, I believe it was somewhere in the range of $3K - $5K.
Raj, could he keep his upgraded 951 suspension and fit it to a non M030 968? Taking the suspension cost out of a M030 upgrade would save some $s.

Bruce, this what is different in an M030 car:
Bigger M030 (S4) front brakes, which includes cast drilled rotors, biggers pads and rotors.
Spindles are stronger and have their caliper mounts radial in essence to the hub.
Front swaybars are 30mm, rears are 19mm 3 way adjustable.
Front struts are coilovers with ride height and rebound adjustability.
Rear shocks are stiffer and have helper springs.
All the M030 cars I have seen have LSD as well.
Lets see how we can better this..
Brakes: Go for big reds. I just did that last night. Cheaper in the long run and you get bigger brakes.
Spindles: You can just opt for adapters or find M030 spindles.
Swaybars: Stock is the best deal out there.
Front struts: There are load of options. 3 way adustable struts as well.
Rear shocks: Load of options.
LSD: Your choice, gear type or clutch type? How much lockup.
So you are 100% correct. You can build something similar or better depending on yoru budget. The difference is that factory M030 cars are rare and hold value. The kit itself would be in the $4.5-5K range when purchased seperately not including LSD.

Yes, I was inspired by a GT3 that I was chasing 2 weeks back. It had color matched yellow wheels and red brakes. Now I will have to get the backs done to match the fronts .
I will post some pics later.

Hey Bruce,
I hadn't really considered selling the struts(they are special--double adjustable), but I must sell the Cab, so if it "encouraged" that sale I would. Heck, I might sell them by themselves too.
I've sold a few sets of the sway bars. I know 030 as I've previously owned an '88 924S w/030, '91 944S2 w/030, '93 968 Coupe w/030, '97 & '98 986 w/030.
I'd be glad to help anyone wanting to install 030 to any extent. I can get better than dealer pricing too. Just EM Znd4spd@aol.com or call 205-229-1851.
