Instrument Cluster Wiring Harness

Instrument Cluster Wiring Harness
I have 1993 -968 Cabriolet that is having electircal issues in my dashboard instrument cluster that are progressively getting worst. . Examples are: 1) Fuel gauge fluctuates between full and empty when tank has plenty of gas. 2) Hi-beam headlight indicator icon no longer illuminates although headlights will still shine bright on high beam. 3) Replace brake pads warning light come on although brakes are fine. 4) Anti-Lock warning lights come on although Anti-Lock mechanism is fine 5) Speedonmeter and odometer no longer indicate speed or accumulate mileage although I recently had them both rebuilt. My mechanic says that the instrument wiring harass is 30 years old and has propbably developed a series of brittal insulation and exposed wiring areas that are causing electrical shortages throughout the circuitry and needs to be replace. However he cannot locate a NEW harness assembly for my 968 and he's afraid that if he replaces with a salvaged harness that it may have the same problems since it will also be 30 years old. Has anyone else encountered my electrical problem/issues? If so what was your solution? Also does anyone have a source for me to purchase a NEW wiring harness for 1993 ---968 Cab??

Weird electrical problem ==> bad ground. Check all your grounds, especially the one above the clutch pedal (under the dash). Remove the bolt, use a wire brush to clean all the surfaces (eyelets, bolt heads, washers, painted metal) down to bare metal, reinstall. Ask your mechanic to guarantee that his solution will work or he will eat it... chances are he won't.

I would say it's a ground issue (or other issue) and not a wiring harness issue. Anything is possible, but I wouldn't let your mechanic work on my car's electrical system. Just sayin'.

Several electrical failures all at once in the same general area points to a bad ground. The only common link between all those is the ground wire. Clean the grounds (which is a known and common problem on all German cars) and you'll see many issues resolve themselves without the need to replace non-broken parts. And best of all, it's free...if you're doing the work.

Thanks to ALL that responded to my above electrical issue.. Three out of 3 of you suggested that I am having a grounding problem. However after looking under my dashboard I cannot locate and do not see any grounding bolts or connections to clean as you suggest. Are these locations concealed with covers? Do anyone have photos of these locations for me to identify? If so please email to me. thanks

For cars our cars’s age I can’t recommend this stuff highly enough. I apply the Gold pretty much every time I disconnect/reconnect a connection. I need to go through and coat all my grounds before I put m6 car away for the winter.

Go and download the workshop manual: http://audipages.com/968/manual/
It's the one P_968_wsm.pdf
Volume V is the electrical section. You can see the ground locations on the top of some of the pages, for example, page 604, top right. You have to get under the dash and you'll find them, they are a big welded stud with brown wires attached to them with a nut holding everything together. This is what you want to take apart and clean.
