I am considering installing something like a Sony XAV-AX8100 in my 968 Cab. The large screen would project upward from the original stereo location. The shape of the dash above and the non stock look are my primary concerns.

I installed the Pioneer AVH-3500NEX

Very please with it. Car Play and you can adjust the angel of the screen so it doesn't hit the ***** behind it.

My goal will be to install the PCCM+ unit eventually. Not large screen, but has all the necessary new technology and the correct period look.

How about Photo shopping it into your dash?

If you're talking about the single DIN, that's the PCCM. The plus models are double-DIN.

Can you use it as a stand alone? Or do you need to sync it up with your cell phone?

I have a double Din in my 951 and the Porsche PCM Classic in my 911. I will caution anyone with a cab about a double DIN even a single DIN flip unit because of glare. Look at mine with sunroof open. The Porsche unit can be bought with NAV maps that do not require a phone. The latest version has Car Play, BT and USB in puts. I opted to get the SQR46 Blau for my 968 and I am pleased with it. I would have bought another Porsche unit but they were backordered forever. I may in the future.

So how do you input destination information? Screen would be awfully difficult to type on....

It can be used stand-alone. 3.5" screen is difficult to see. If you don't have perfect vision, you'd be better off using the entire pocket for a double-din with an anti-glare screen protector. I wanted the PCCM mainly for aesthetics.

Thumbs up 3500NEX

I also installed the Pioneer AVH-3500NEX. I swapped the clock to the upper slot. It works well & while I can't see the clock when the screen is deployed. The screen has a clock so alls well. My iPhone slips just behind the deployed screen & the system produces great sound with the stock speakers. I tend to use cd's over radio and it's nice having directions with a bigger screen versus the standard phone screen. Yet when not deployed the system is very unobtrusive; once the high gloss Pioneer label edge when closed is replaced with a "Porsche" label in line with the rest of the interior.

That’s sure purdy and I like how the design fits the 25 year old Porsche, but for $1500 it should have a bloody HUD. IIRC, the one in my buddy’s Chevy pickup was an $800 option.

A HUD? First the street price is about 1300 which is pretty reasonable all things considered. But how is a HUD related to a HU? I have HUDs in other cars but the dash on all of those cars is like 7 times wider than on a 968. You realize HUDs are built into the dash, generally have a special windshield and software to generate the information. Never happening on a 968.
