Any lightwieght 968's??
I've been listening to the evil voice in my head and am thinking about getting a 968.
It would probally be mostly for autocross/DE. I'm a little concerned that my boost addicted self won't enjoy a NA motor as much, but with the extra grunt down low and stripping as much weight as possible out of it I might not miss it a bit. I would like at least the same level of performance that I'm getting out of my 951 right now.
Considering that my 951 weighs about 3000 lbs and dyno'ed at 240hp to the wheels, and the 968 puts down about 205 at the wheels. The 968 would have to be stripped down to at least 2600lbs to have the same power to weight ratio. Has any one got thier 968 down that far without going to the extreme (bodypanels/glass/ect)?
I would love to hear from you guys that have went this direction with your 968. How light could you get it and how did you do it?
Jason

Three Wheelin'
The Club Sport model weighed about 2910 pounds about a 110 pound drop from a standard coupe.
I would think you would have to look at replacing body panels to loose that weight.

Hi Jason-
You'd be hard pressed to get to 2600 and still have it streetable. I'm at 2650 with a stripped race 968. My car has no interior except the dash, no airbags, one recaro race seat, A/C deleted, no fans, no heater (there is nothing behind the dash), lexan door & quater windows, the doors are completely gutted, no cat, lightweight flywheel, CF hood, fiberglass sunroof, no rear bumper, fiberglass rear bumper cover & no torsion bars. I still have to switch the rear hatch to lexan, and get rid of the headlights but other than that further weight reduction gets pretty expensive. If you didn't have a roll cage & race gear you could get under 2600 easier.

If you are a boost addict like I am, you will always miss it and eventually either go back to it or add it to your future 968.
With the stock 968, there is some grunt to be desired past 4000-4500 where it feels like it is no longer making much more power. Being a turbo owner, you already know what happens to a 951 at this rpm range .
Regards.

Great answers!
Eric, I was hoping that you would chime in. Hows the car working out for you? I bet it's an absolute blast to drive!
Bruce,
That was one of my thought is to build a CS replica taken a few steps further. If I could get it down to 2800lbs or so with major surgury that would work.
Raj,
Thats what I was afraid of........I guess it will have to wait untill I can find the funds to get the car and super/turbo-charge it!
I loved the SC 968 CS that was in 911 & Porsche world last month, that would be prefect!

Jason-The car is a blast to drive. It still has plates so I can drive it on the street but it is not comfortable to drive on the road. My first race of the year was last week at Portland. I could have done better but the old tires I was using didn't hold up for the whole race.
You would definitely miss the boost though. My car never had it and I miss it. There are some fast cars in the classes I've been running with and they just pull away on the staights. BTW, I'll be racing at Pacific Raceways the weekend of the 22nd.
