Default My 968 turbo cab totalled

It has been a sad day. I do not drive the car that much but I put a lot of blood sweat and tears into this car. A young girl trying to pick up a door dash on her phone never stopped and slammed right into me. The 968 turbo cab is totalled. The front and engine are okay. Would it be worth buying the car back from insurance and selling the 3.0 turbo engine? Progressive has not given me a price yet.

Sorry to hear. An unfortunate risk that we all take when we drive our cars. PM sent

Glad that you are ok and equally sad to hear about the loss of the car.

As others have said, buy it back. There are a lot of useful items that can be reused - or even transferred to another donor if you're willing to take on that kind if a project.

Always buy it back. Part it out... I know for a fact that some of the bows and struts for the cabriolet top are on galactic backorder.

I am definitely going to try and buy it back. The insurance company has not given me that amount yet. They are still trying to value the car. I put a ton into the engine alone. JE forged Pistons and rods, racing studs, M-tune, Lindsey super 60 turbo, tial 46 mm, sfr full exhaust, so much was put into this car.

Don't tell them that. Tell them that it is a 25 year old beater car. The least valuable of all Porsches. You want a low buy back value.

I have not told them anything yet. The insurance company does not know the engine work.

Sad to hear. When I wrote off my 964 on the way to Le Mans years back I bought the salvage. Here in the UK the insurance policy small print will usually give an indication of buy-back %age. In my case it was 20% of the insured value. With the rest of the insurance payout I bought a tired 964 and literally did a lift and shift of all my updated parts (RS clutch/flywheel, all new suspension etc plus loads more). This was in 2012. My main regret since is that I wish I stripped it down into every single component, which now are very pricey or simply no longer available. Definitely hold onto it and take your time either repairing or transferring.

From the image is it certain it can't be repaired? The 968 chassis is very strong and getting it checked on a jig and fully measured should hopefully make a repair economically viable. Good luck.

Yogii - if he convinces the insurance company that it’s worth nothing, then his monetary settlement may be based on that. Your focusing on the fact that the buyback value will be a percentage of the settlement but are not considering that the lion’s share ($$) of the settlement is paid to the owner. He’s much wiser to play up how much $ was in the car and pay the increased buyback percentage. My son once lost a highly modified 240SX. Same situation; he wasn’t at fault. After outlining the build specs on the car, he was paid ~ 7500 for a car that would have typically settled ~ 3500 and got to keep the salvage ONLY because we were able to prove the amount of $ that was in the car.

Sorry to hear that....sounds like a fun car!

The number they throw at you is normally negotiable, so dont feel bad trying to negotiate it down a little. In my experience they seem to offer the customer a price about 70-90% of what they can get on IAA auction or Copart auction. That insurance auction marketplace is fairly mature and they will have a decent idea of what they can expect out of your totaled chassis. In fact Im surprised at times what cars go for on these sites and then you have to pay their fees on top of the auction price.
