I would need proof of the comps, because - I think they are completely full of shilt. If two different buyers bought a variant of a 968 for over $500k, I need to see the checks. No offense to the 968, even a TS but that price is just not remotely believable.

 

I agree. I wasn't going to push the issue with them via email. They seem to think their asking price is fair...

 

Just for reference, one of the 4 968 Turbo RS sold here in Europe a couple of years ago for what would equal 700 000 usd.

 

I believe this is the preproduction prototype, carrying the VIN WPOZZZ96ZPS890001. This is a 93 model year car, not a 94.
The following 14 production cars were WPOZZZ96ZPS890061-71 for 93 and WPOZZZ96ZRS890061-63 for 94.

I heard stories about all those cars accumulating somewhere...

 

Agreed with you except this car is indeed a 94 model year according to the VIN, WPOZZZ96ZRS890001. I can't explain why but it is. There was no PS890001.

The CoA is wrong. Show me a picture of the VIN on the shell clearly showing an R rather than a P and I will concede I am wrong.

FYI, I totally agree with you on what makes sense. But that said, all the references I have seen about the car for years always had an R.

 

Well, I first heard about this car more than 15 years ago and according to a few sources back then it was always documented as the very first S built with a P for the '93 model year. This is the very first time now I hear it may be a '94 instead. Maybe my sources were wrong, but for me if it's 0001 then I find it really hard to believe it's a '94, even with a CoA.

This car seems to have been mostly gone through, even perhaps including a full repaint. It seems to look far better now than when I saw it advertised for sale about 15 years ago. The patina on the bodywork seems all gone.

At last for now but not least, the VIN in this curious CoA reads WPOZZZ99 rather than WPOZZZ96... This really is not serious for a pretended official document and for small series cars like this one I might only trust a CoA signed by some factory boffin in Stuttgart.

Perhaps the car was originally built as an exhibition car by the factory, used as such for a year and then turned from a P into an R to be sold to the public.

 

Ok, I stand corrected. This is indeed a '94, which was built as an exhibition car for the Geneva motor show in 1994.
