Default Oil Temp Sender location

My brain seems to not be working these days and I am tired of google searches returning 944 results.

If I get an error code 17 from the DME does this sound correct for that sensor failing and is it at an easy to get to location off the pan or something?

Anyone have the torque spec?

Also I read that a failing sensor will put the car in limp mode, anyone know anything about this?

Thanks all for any help

WSM says: The engine temperature sensor informs the control unit of the actual oil temperature. Changes of the oil temperature cause the VarioCam shift points to be relocated.
Hm, in this case I don't know anything about a limb mode, since this just changes the VarioCam shift points.

Years ago my wiring disintegrated, but the sensor still worked.

the sensor is in the oil galley rail in the head between the #2 and #3 cylinders. I didn't see the torque spec in the manual.

Yes, and look for the brown plug housing. ☝️😁

Torque spec is 15 Nm or 11 lb ft.

Another question, will a standard socket fit over that or do I need special bits at all.

I just removed all the sensors and other hardware that are along the top of the block on the intake side. No special tools.
