Introducing new Rennlist site sponsor: FUNCTION-FIRST Performance

TRANSMISSION MOUNT INSERT
Fitment: 964 2WD

The OEM transmission mount was designed for ride comfort and is prone to sagging and tearing – above all, it is a detriment to performance. Its empty voids allow for too much transmission movement, resulting in sloppy handling, numbed responsiveness, and imprecise shifting. Racecars utilize a solid metal mount to mediate this, which is impractical for street use as it transfers extreme noise and vibration into the cabin.

So how do you achieve the benefits of a solid mount while retaining daily drivability? Function-First Performance offers the only available solution that is both economical and easy to install. Our durable urethane rubber insert simply slips in to fill and fortify the empty voids of the OEM mount - prevent premature bushing wear and undesirable transmission movement, all while transmitting minimal added noise and vibration.

The result? Handling is taut and predictable; power delivery is immediate and smooth; gear changes are crisp and confident.

Installation can be completed with basic hand tools in about one hour. Pressing out the stock transmission mount bushing is NOT necessary, so you can easily return your car to stock condition when selling!

Economical compared to the other solutions on the market that require pressing out the OEM bushing, which in most cases necessitates dropping the transmission.

With the installation of the TRANSMISSION MOUNT INSERT, you will be rewarded with improved shifting and enhanced performance. These benefits, however, come at the cost of some increased noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH), and we understand that this is the main concern for our existing and prospective customers.

I daily drive my car with the Insert, but I realize that my tolerance for the NVH increase may not be in line with others.

As such, we will now be offering a softer version (for the 964/993 2WD applications) in addition to the original harder version.

Choose between two hardness levels:
STREET - Yellow (70A) for less NVH *Softer version*
TRACK - Black (80A) for optimized performance *Original version*

There will still be some NVH transmittal with the STREET version, but it will be much more bearable for those wishing to keep their car purely streetable. For those interested more in the performance benefits, we still recommend the original TRACK version for spirited street driving, AutoX, and DE/Track.

If you already purchased an Insert and wish to exchange for the softer version, pls email us at sales@function-first.com to arrange for an exchange. (Buyer will be responsible for shipping charges, and a 10% restocking fee if the original Insert was used.) Any other questions or concerns, pls feel free to email.

Thanks!

Installed the yellows Friday night. Well worth the effort.

I'd think stiffer engine mounts would be more effective. The trans mount is decent as it is.

When you stiffen the mounts, would the rest of the drivetrain be able to sustain the added stiffness/shock?

Not sure i understand the commentary here - if the rubber in the trans mount bushing has 106k miles on it and is 22 years old something should be done to the engine mounts?

That's new info, but that being the case, why wouldn't you just buy a new trans mount?

$265 for the stock mount. Then try to press the old one out - it's a major job. Cheaper race versions are available but they are noisy and transmit vibration and most daily drivers would hate them on the street. BTW - the bushing as I found it was in pretty good shape, just loose. This thing will probably prevent it from tearing or collapsing some day. This worked for me is all I'm saying.

Some guys over on the 993 TT and 964 board have installed the "shim" for lack of a better word and have reported mixed results. That's the problem with subjective evaluations.

Okay then - I'm glad I did this instead of what they did since this thing improved the shifting and on/off throttle performance of the car dramatically. I've been driving the car a week now and I would pay twice what they were asking now that i've been able to feel the differences.

My engine mounts were dying so I went to RS mounts. We'll see how they feel when I get the car running again. It's the same situation; some swear by them, some can't feel the difference. I did consider some options for the trans mount; the Function First shim and the Turbokraft mount, as well as a new stock mount but RS mounts have set me back enough as it is.
You might want to check the shifter coupling for wear. It;s the cheapest part on the car and was designed for the 356 so it's ancient. The plastic bushing tends to oval out and shifting gets sloppy.
