Well I found a way to combat mid life crisis!! She is Red with Black interior and only 35k miles. Other than a TechArt Exhaust and 1 bar spring she is stock. Compared to my prevoius 964 cab it is like night and day! I look forward to sharing and learning. Once I figure out how to attach images I will post some.

Well Done!! These are truly great cars!

I took mine on the track on Wednesday evening... it is stock - no changes at all, and changing from 3rd to 4th down the straight I get flames!

Way Cool

They do require respect out there tho'... specially in the wet!

Have a Blast! <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Thats awsome about the flames. I'm picking my turbo up in 2 days!!!! What could you do to make your turbo shoot flames out the exahust? My turbo has upgrades headers, exahust and k-29 turbo, I wonder if it would be more likley to shoot flames. I'm gonna take a ton of pictures money and post them on a website.

Whoops forgot the message.

To get flames you must remove or bypass the cat.

Hey guys,
About that flames&cat&stuff....a while back I read about removing the cat or muffler for better performance and/or sound. When I only bypass the cat, what do I get? HP/dB/Flames-wise I mean ? I heard that removing the cat AND muffler would be too loud. So I'm not sure what to remove. The cat OR the muffler.
Any ideas ?
I would LOVE those flames btw

Oscar,

I've removed just the muffler on the right side of the car and replaced it with a J pipe.

The sounds is great at idle and about the same as before during cruising on the highway. During wot, the car sounds great but not too loud. During off throttle, the car has little bit of back pressure with some poping, quite cool. No flames and you will notice a little better off boost throttle response.

Regards,

Sonny

ps: Oh, you will save about 15-20 lbs of weight too.

Question

Hi Everyone

About those flames...

My 3.3l C2T is absolutely stock, no extra or minus nothing!

In fact, I really did not know that I was firing the odd flame, until a guy who was chasing me in a 993 mentioned it... and then I asked some of the people in the pits to watch and film it, and everyone saw it.

Here are the circumstances:
-Track day started around 4pm, ended around 10pm.
-The flames occured at different points, but they were consistently being fired everytime I was flat out down the straight, and changed from 3rd to 4th. My revs at this point were just on the red line.
- apparently, according the the guy in the 993, the whole of the left exhaust (the blow off) glowed red, and flames blew out during gear changes.

OK, now two things.
- I think - think! ... the reason could be fuel mixture! The reason I say this is that I was running Mobil Synergy 8000, and then a tank of Shell Optimax. These are very high octane fuels (as you know <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" /> ).
- I was talking to a guy who does many many track events, and he told me that to really get the flames up, add octane boost to your fuel. Now, I have not tried this... but draw the correlation? Higher octane, more flame? Dunno, I'm not an expert... anyone?

Anyway, I did catch this on video... anyone interested in seeing it? I can try to post a short clip, or ask John Miles to post a clip on his site?

Have Fun!! <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

***CUT***

Did the flames come out of the left ?!
I assume not..but you never know.

At what point does the wastegate release ?
I heard from a guy who drove behind me that I may have an engine problem, because my left exhaust smokes more times then the right one
But WHEN does this happen ? When I accelerate or when I lift the gas ?

Someone told me you can better hear the nice noises (like the pffft and pcchht and that sort ) when driving it hard when I remove the cat OR muffler. Anyone any input on this ?

Flames occur when unspent fuel mixture hits the oxygen rich exhaust environment and instantly ingnites in an explosion. An overrich condition will exacerbate the effect.

Flames out of the wastegate pipe occur when unspent fuel mixture is released through the wastegate on overboost (your car is overboosting when you shift from 3rd to 4th). If you change to a more efficient wastegate this will be all but eliminated because the wastegate will close before overboost can occur. I have Tial and I get zero overboost. BTW overboost is not good and neither are flames coming out of your wastegate pipe.

OTOH flames out of the exhaust pipe occur when excess unspent fuel mixture is dumped into the exhaust system on let off. When the wastegate gate closes the unpsent fuel is shunted into the exhaust. This is typical on turbo systems, because on let off the fuel system cannot shut down as quick as the wastegate closes so excess fuel is pumped into system and blown out. This is OK and looks even cooler because the flames tend to be bigger (several feet at times). You will not get the "flame" effect if you run a cat because the cat will retard the flame. However, you are still getting flames into your cat (just can't see em). I run a muffler straight off of the turbo (this subject - muffler straight off of the turbo with no cat v. muffler with cat bypass pipe - has been hashed out on this board several times).

Overall I'd guess that your fuel mixture may be too rich which causes the fuel mixture to not burn efficiently in the cylinders. But it is better than being too lean, especially on the track.

Mark,

I need to find out where the flames were coming from

I was looking forward from the driver's seat at the time

Will let you know!
Thanks for the head-up <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />

Uhhh, Ohhhh!!

Flames were from the wastegate. The whole lefthand 'exhaust' (wastegate) was glowing red hot, and on gear changes was shedding flames...

Any suggestions?

About the flames from the left side.

Stock there should be a small cat (at least on Euro cars) behind the wastegate (believe it or not), perhaps it has been removed.

That is correct there is a wastegate cat (at least on U.S. cars). I'd take out the one bar boost spring that is probably in there and/or replace the stock wastegate with a Tial.

I would also have your fuel map checked out.
