First track day - impressions and questions
I had my first track experience with my 3,3 Turbo 2 with the Porsche Club of Sweden on the Gelleråsen track. I was looking forward to this and was not dissapointed, I will try and participate more in the future, track driving sure is a blast
The old lady did very well (only 2 cars passed me over 40mins track time), I was a bit carefull with the brakes not accelerating fully at the end of the straight but in the end I had no brake fade what so ever and was very pleased. Handling was great with a little tendancy to oversteer when the tires were to warm.
Only problem I had was with the Turbo lag. Is it just me or do you guys agree that at low rpm's the engine is very weak. After some turns I started to accelerate earlier and earlier, way before the apex and it was a bit better. The alternative was to go down to 2nd to keep the boost on but I am not sure I would gain time because off course you need to upshift again... Going down to 2nd was a bit hard as well for some reason the gear box would refuse to go into 2nd may be it's time to learn double clutching
Anyway I would love to hear your feedback i.e. if you have the same problem of speed going out of turns (may be I need to have the injectors cleaned to improve the low end torque). Is there a way to make the Turbo less digital (i.e. it's on or off, boost comes like a hammer from 0,1 bar to 0,7!)
All i have to say is despite these short comings I love my car, a real challenge to drive well and a lot of fun

Vince5,
Thanks for a great report. As for me, I've never taken my car to the track, so, I can't really help you much with track driving speeds. I wish I could take my car to the track at least once.
But, there are a lot of things to do to improve the spool time of the turbo at a lower rpm. The experts on this forum will chime I am sure. An electronic boost controller, a Rice fuel enrichment device (will help when off boost acceleration too), Headers, J bypass pipe (for right hand side muffler), Cat-bypass for the Cat. All these things will make your car spool up faster.
Regards,
Sonny

Hi Vince
Good to hear you had a good track experience. I was at Gelleråsen this weekend as well, I was there saturday, where you there sunday ?
I guess we all suffer from the turbo lag more or less. Things that could improve your situation:
- Check the Compressor Bypass Valve, search this forum and you will find out how to check, how it works etc.
- Electronic Boost Control, faster spool
- Get rid of cat, faster spool
- Install SC cams, better off boost performance
You probably read Keith's post on mods to the 3.3l turbo, there is a lot of good information there.
I have none of the above installed, have ordered a new CBV from Forge since I think mine is gone.
I drilled my airbox, I beleive I got better throttle response, but I have no proof to back it up.
I am going to clean my injectors while doing my 80.000 km service.
The best thing I ever did to improve track performance was to have Podium Racing align the car with lots of camber. It is like a new car, I go for night drives just to experience the car's new cornering capability over and over again.
My alignment numbers are:
Camber Front -1.9
Toe-in Front 0
Camber Rear -1.8
Toe-in Rear 2.5 (mm?)
Fair warning, this setting will increase tire wear and increase the need to drive "smooth".
I did 3 sessions at Gelleråsen this weekend, got passed once by a GT3, which didn't ruin my day :-)

Thanks for your feedback guys. Yep I did read the post on mods for the 3,3 and I already have the bypass pipe. Also the car had a lot of camber when I bought it but it was really hard to keep on a straight line on bad roads so I had the seller dial in less camber before the purchase (BTW the car is lowered almost as much as possible to keep it street legal and I have 18 inch wheels). May be with time I will reconsider. Thanks a lot for the figures you gave me they may prove usefull
For the rest I will see next year but the injector cleaning is top of the list with the CBV (I 'll listen to it this week-end). Spool is already very fast I think, it's the off boost torque where I am looking for improvements. SC cams is probably expensive ?
Steffan - yes I was there on the Sunday. Which group do you drive into R1 or R2? Another question do you go down to 2nd gear in the sharper turns (the S after the right hand curve at the end of the straight and the sharp right end turn after the S) ? I took them in 3rd mainly, I did try to go down to 2nd a few times and it "feels" better but i am not sure it's faster, you switch to 3rd to late... The instructors told me to stay in 3rd.
I will be at Knustorp on the 28th with the OR group

Vince, you have a bypass pipe for the cat, what brand is it ?
Does the car pass smog inspection without the cat and is the lambda connected to the bypass pipe in any way ?
You are saying "spool is allready very fast", not sure I wanted to hear that
Better off boost torque is also on my agenda, I am going to do a little bit of research in this area. Don't know what SC cams cost, but I will find out.
I drive in the R1 group, I use standard street tires on 17' wheels. You find the track here:Gelleråsen
I use 2nd gear at "Esset", "Eje's kurva" and "Hårnålen". I know there are guys with 964 turbos that only use 2nd gear at "Eje's kurva".
I will be at "Mantorp" the 22nd, that will probably be the last trackday for me this season.

Oups now you are to technical for me . I'll have to ask my mechanic for the details (he explained to me something about bypass when I did the prebuy exam. I'll come back to you !
When I say spool is very fast I mean when it comes it goes from 0,1bar to 0,7 in no time, but first you have to get 3500rpms !
Yes Eje's kurva is really the curve were I felt I should be in 2nd but I must have it checked, it was so hard to shift down to 2nd.
I couldn't get a slot for Mantorp unfortunatly so I will be at Knutstorp instead. I am sure we will meet during the season next year
Good luck and have fun !

The bypass mentioned by the PPI guy could very well be a muffler bypass. The reason I'm interested is that I have heard that a warm engine w/o cat will pass the Swedish smog inspection.
Stock, these cars have a cat below the center of the rear bumper and a secondary muffler behind the right rear wheel. A lot of these cars have U shaped pipe instead of the secondary muffler.
I would check the CBV, it is known to fail. A failed one could give you that all or nothing power feel. Having said that, the trademark of these cars are that afterburner sensation when the turbo kicks in.
I got my Forge CBV today and will probably install it tonight. The reason why I got a new one is that the car has a new and very cool popping sound when downshifting, but cool sound isn't everything
Vince, what color of car do you have, mine is read.

Great to meet you and "the old lady" last night.
There should be very little doubts in our minds that the CBV needs to be replaced. You can order one here: Forge
The part number is FMCL007P, you need to tell them if you want a black or polished one.
It is very easy to change, you basically need a screwdriver and 5-10 minutes.
Vince, we forgot to switch business cards last night, send an email to staffan@certos.se

Great to meet you as well and very interesting to try your car and compare. BTW I forgot to mention I did feel the "lurching" you talked about in your other post when taking the foot off the gas, it wasn't very disturbing but I didn't push you car to much
I'll send you my email !
