Default Cruddy looking fan

Is there anything that works for cleaning the fan. Both 965/964s that I have had have a cruddy looking fans. Any suggestions other than taking it out and re-painting it. what is the deal with this, it doesn't seem to happen with any other models except for the 930/964/965. Any suggestions on how to clean it. Thanks in advance.

Mike

There is little you can do to make the fan look good short of a respray. I believe the factory painted it a very light coat of zermat silver. But do to the heat and water exposure the fans coating wore off very fast. The other issue is that you can only access about 5 or 6 blades at any one time when you try to clean it in the car. Though I will tell you as a PCA Concours judge I do not take off points for that because it is a natural aging process of the engine. As long as it is clean.

I left mine alone during a recent rebuild since the car only has 62,000 miles, I thought it was appropriate? If you do have it painted or powder coated make sure the overall diameter is not expanded, it's a close fit!

I wet sanded then polished mine, it was really pretty........for about 2 weeks, then it practically started to melt from corrosion. Whatever you do you have to put some sort of protective coating on it.

Jerry, what do mean it started to melt? Literly? or did it just get dirty or corrosive again? Did you have to replace the fan?

Thanks
Mike

Interesting.
Looking at photos of show cars, the fans on pre-964 cars seem to be gold anodized. I sandblasted mine and painted it with the Eastwood faux anodizing paint.
Nothing does more to pick up the appearance of the engine compartment than a good looking fan and housing.

I let it sit for a couple of weeks and when i opened the engine compartment the entire fan was covered in a white crust that i could scratch off with my fingernail which would leave a scratch in the metal. I think they are magnesium if im not mistaken. I have often wondered what was left of the fan after taking a salty boat trip to Qatar where the car now resides.

Yes as Jerry said, the fans are made of magnesium and will oxidize if not protected in some way.
