Default 964 3.6 turbo fuel / knock sensor question

I am considering purchasing a 94 3.6 turbo which is on the market here in Thailand.

Its a magnificent example of the car with less than 15k miles on the clock and conditiion to match.

One of the things that has given me pause is that here in thailand it is now impossible to purchase 95 octane fuel with no alcohol content. I can v power 95 everywhere and 91 regular to which I could add a booster but good old fashioned 95 is a thing of the past.

Are any of you running 95 gasohol in these cars and if so have you had any problems related to that? I dont mind changing fuel lines to more modern ones etc but I would rather not have to mess with really involved modifications.

On a related topic I downloaded Adrian Streathers excellent guide to the engine and related systems and noticed on p2 it says

"Note: Both the M30/69 and M64/50 turbocharged engines are designed to operate on 95 RON/ 85 MON fuels. However Porsche recommend that 98 RON fuel is used. The turbocharged engines are not fitted with knock regulation protection."

When I checked on Pelican parts there is indeed a knock sensor sold for the car so could someone please clarify. It makes no sense to me that a high performance engine of this quality would not have a knock sensor since it was certainly used in the 964 base models.

Advice from anyone with experience in this subject greatly appreciated.

Dennis

hi Dennis,

absolutly right what Adrian wrote, the 965 including 3.6 did not have knock sensors and in addition to that they are far away from modern engine management.

the k-jetronik was already fusty when these cars were build in the early nineties. at that time business was not going well at Porsche and they where already concentrated on development of the 993 biturbo. the 964 turbo was an interim solution.

anyhow, for normal street use 95 ROZ is fine, for performance trips and track days i would have a quieter conscience with 98 ROZ.

From memory this is the jumper. In my car it was taped in the loom leading to the EZ69.

Sorry, not definitively. However, as there is no other obvious male plug in the loom to connect it to I assumed it was just capped with a connector. I would do nothing until I understood it. I will check my wiring diagram tonight.

In the wiring diagrams it is only a plug connected to the EZ69.

Maybe it will correct the ignition time for lower octane food.

I had never seen this cap here in europe.

regards TOm

The EZ 69 isnt a very "intelligent" unit, so i couldnt imagine how the plug will works and influence the ignition.

Original position of plug and image of jumper. Jumper looks like it grounds pin 4 on the EZ69 - oh for a GOOD quality wiring diagram...

I always wondered what that plug was for.
