What is the difference between the 'Standard colors' and the 'Special Order colors'? May be a stupid question, but both the standard and special colors were available to order, so what makes the 'special order colors' so special?

from reading Anthonys post it would appear standard colours were ordered by dealers for stock cars ie to put on the forecourt. The special order colours were at the request of clients who wanted something different to the forecourt colours and hence paid a higherdeposit to have the car made for them, ie clour to order.

I'm pretty sure special order color and paint to sample had a cost assoicated with it.

Special order colors back in the early 90's were a no cost option, however paying customers were needed to order them. These colors could not be ordered by the dealership to sit in their showroom and await a potential buyer.

Unlike today where special order colors carry a premium and can be ordered by the dealership with the additional cost being added to the Sticker.

As you can see cobalt is now a $3070 option and is not even the same pearl effect color. According to my window sticker it was at no charge but ordered by a Mr. Levine in Florida.

not strictly 100% with the colours discussed but here http://www.landsharkoz.com/htm/sc/colourblack.htm is a 928 based site with a great deal of different colours, if you want an idea of the wide range of shades etc available over the years

The window sticker I was speaking of is the one that is placed on the window prior to sale spelling out all the different options on the car. They look the one i posted below.

Good site but be careful some of the colors they have listed are incorrect. The cobalt blue car is actually Iris blue and a few others like that but a good site non the less.

it was never a problem for me, my old S4 was shwartz black, bog standard but it looked awesome with a good polish. I'm sure they would be happy to have few additions and corrections, I think they have a link to message comments.

Oh, we don't use these things in Europe, so thats why I didn't know what it was.

How do they show what the car offers in options when sitting on the lot? or do you have to inquire about each car?

I've never bought a new Porsche, but from what I know the cars are sold before they even get to the UK.

Of course, the dealer makes up a card when they sell used cars, there are plenty of those for sale although mostly Boxsters.

Most US dealerships carry a large inventory of cars they order from the factory or in some cases are supplied by the factory as they determine. It is then their responsibility to try to sell them. Depending on the size of the Porsche dealership they might have as many as 20 or 60 cars on the lot at a given time. If you want a specific color or combination of options they might trade with another dealership or if not available would have to order it directly from the factory as specified.

The only cars that usually get sold prior to delivery are the rare models or first off of a new model. So more than likely your new GT2 or GT3RS's are all sold before they make it here. Base models, caymen, boxster, 997, cayenne are always available from their inventory.

Ha our Porsche dealership if your very lucky will have one new car in the showroom and a couple of demo cars that the bosses use as there cars, not the nicest guys to deal with either.......
