Default Maintenance checklist anymore ideas

Hi guys i got a healthy tax return and I am ordering all these parts now heres a list of what im goin to do with my engine out.... is there anything else you would recommend and if you have done anything on this list that is tricky or difficult will you let me know??? Thanks alot.

Hi Jerry,

you might want to go easy on the engine tin, often they are badly corroded and ideally need replacing. I think taking off and sandblasting may finish them off. Perhaps an idea to sorce replacements just in case.

If you are replacing exhaust studs, be ready to cut the old ones off and have new gaskets to hand.

cautious blasting is no problem. i´ve got the tins of my car blasted (to get paint off), first zinc- and finaly powder-coated.
it took me just a few bucks, look like new and will (hopefully) last for the next ten years.

there's a number of metal shrouds around the engine, I pressume primarily for heat protection or to prevent water ingress at key areas. Others can confrim. You will often see parts of it in pictures of removed engines, there are bits around the bottom edges. These are prone to attack from corrosion esp if you live in a winter salted wonderland!!

WhenI had my engine out last December, I contemplated doing someting with the tins, but they were just in too bad of shape.

Did they use sand or some other kind of material????
paint stripping without marking the tin surface is not really a problem for skilled blasters, in my case they used glas sand i guess. i´ve seen that it works fine with dry ice pellets, too.

The engine tin is black, the easiest piece to see is the one that has the turbo coming through it.

The engine tin is very expensive,,if it looks ok and maybe just has some surface rust etc,,i would just give it a wire brush etc and use hammerite satin black paint on it,that is what i done it looks good and will last another 15 years or so..
you will find the rear section that goes over the turbo and cat will be the worse condition part with all the heat at that section,I had to fix this section..


What about fitting new clutch kit in there??
Engine rebuild kit from EBS comes with majority of your rebuild parts
Arp headstud kit and arp conrod bolts from EBS is a must (only around $750 for both kits)..no more headstuds breaking after fitting these!!

I have seen tins sell cheap, try the dismantler places. Some pieces are common to many models and shouldn't be that pricey.

I recommend using black beauty grit to blast them under low pressure. Aggressive enough but breaks up on impact and doesn't chew all the metal away. Another option is acid dipping for paint removal. I did this on my 914 tin and it came out like new.

Engine tin is very important and if yours is gone you want to replace it to keep all the contaminants out of the engine bay.

You can also easily test your injectors for flow pattern instead of spending money first. You might find they don't need cleaning.

Maybe you can find second hand good condition tin in the states i suppose,,out here in the uk with the not so good climate and salted roads on winter days you would find second hand tin to be no better than your own!
I believe new it costs over £100($200) pound per section!
If it is solid enough with only some minor surface corrision,,treat it then paint and it wont be an issue!

How long do these clutches typically last??? Mine has less than 15000 miles on it.
From what i have seen the engine tins are pretty good except the one over the exhuast does have some surface rust. Im just going to blast them and then paint with some kind of rust resistor paint.
Cobalt i figured for 16 dollars an injector i might as well just go ahead and get them cleaned and flow tested. Have you ever removed the injectors in the turbo??? They look like they just screw in??
