Default How does the 993 compare to the 965?

Hi all,

I've had 964 and 993 as daily driver, but never driven a 965 before. Wondering how does the two cars compare. Looks, power, comfort, maintenance, etc.

3.3 Turbos only please. The 3.6 is a above the 993 in term of power.

thanks,
anthony

From what I've heard the 91-92 3.3 T are pretty close the 94 3.6 T, almost the same

3.3 = 320hp, 3.6 = 360bhp, both much quicker than a NA 993 and 964...

The 993 is a touring slug compared to a 3.3 turbo.

Maintenance is only applicable to the condition of your car and how you want to modify it. My car has had one incident in 3 years; the ac compressor bracket broke near where the guide pulley for the accessory belt is. Every other shop visit was to either change the look, ride or power of the car. The AC, ABS, suspension, and gear box are all great. Just get a PPI done and good luck with your search.

I admit to never having driven a 993 but there is no comparison between a 964 and and 965 in terms of power and performance - the turbo knocks its dick in the dirt, big time!

I had a '97 993 C2 S and now own a '92 C2 Turbo for 7 years +. I will take a 3.3 965 over any 993, except for a 993 TT.

Honestly, the 993 was like my Integra GSR with more power. I am talking about the power delivery and not the built quality or handling. The Porsche is better in all other areas.

Once you're hit with the "Boost Bong" you can't go back.

Correct. A Vram 993 is not that much slower than a 3.3T in terms of straight line speed at the track. A 964 with a decent exhaust and healthy motor is only a tad slower.

What I meant is that I heard that a 91-92 3.3 Turbo is almost the same as a 94 3.6 Turbo not a 993. I guess your talking about a 993 turbo?

Love your avatar by the way

What about the power deliver in the 965? In the 993, at least mine, the power is up in the upper end past 3K. Below 3K, it's so so. Or maybe I'm just used to the big 3.6.

Is the power in the 965 elastic, meaning it's little power/torque below 4K, and then WooOOSH as the turbo kick in?

Maximum torque of the 3.3 Turbo is 332 (320 HP @ 5750rpm, 332 lb/ft @ 4500rpm, 3234 lbs/1470 kg).

Something like 80% of the torque is available from around 2000 rpm. Still, you will feel a little bit of turbo lag as compare to a normally aspirated 3.6, especially noticeable when down shift in traffic. There are many ways (mods) to help minimize the turbo lag.

At full boost, you will left traffic behind like they were stand still.

The main difference between the two cars is the way power is delivered. In my C4S, I needed to be above 3500 rpms for the car to pull and frankly accelleration was even a little disappointing in comparison to my modded Audi S4. In my 3.6 turbo, there seems ot be a lot more low end torque so its easier to drive as you can simply leave it in 2nd or 3rd gear - and then of course all hell breaks loose once the turbo kicks in. Handling wise, the 965 seems to be a little more nimble, however you do feel that most of the weight is behind the rear axle so watch out.

There is not much difference in the interior layout of of the car. I have the lumbar support seats in the turbo which I find a tad better than the standard 993 seats. With respect to looks, I prefer the classic lines of the 965.

With respect to maintenance, this will be entirely a function of your car's pedigree. It took me a year to make my C4S "perfect" (which didn't cost much as it was mostly cosmetics) before I had to sell it for financial reasons. It has taken me 9 months to sort out my turbo - at a huge cost.

Nevertheless, if I'm ever rich, I'd love to add a 993TT to the stable.

Default my take

I have both the straight turbos and turbo S's of the 964s and 993. The 993, despite the fun banter up here about being no comparison, is a mean car. not mean like, mike tyson with the painted face mean, but like Sugar ray leonard. fast, quick, mean acceleration, but refined.

993, you cant get that car off line. you drill around turns as hard as you like and she hugs crazy. in the 964, u bump something at a heavy yaw angle, you get that rush of "oops, i hope i didnt goof up that bad"

Handlng wise, they are both awsome, but again, everything in the 993 is more refined, not that its better or worse. just different.

u really cant go wrong eithe rway, but if it were me, and i had to make a choice, it would be 964 all day every day. i just like the nasty. then again, i'm married with 3 kids, i'mlooking for all the legitimate, safe nasty i can get.

I think the original poster was actually trying to compare the normally aspirated 993 and 964 against the 964 Turbo, not 993 TT against 964 T.
