1991 Turbo at RPM
OK---here I go again---never satisfied with what I have. The 993 Cab will be on the market soon.
Seriously looking at the '91 Guards red Turbo at RPM (www.rpmsportscars.com). Ray is asking $56,500 for this pristine example with all records. Car is said to be "practically new condition". Being the mental patient that I am, I would have to have it lowered and probably put a set of 18" rims on it. Now it's a $60,000+ car---not including shipping to NY and tax.
A car, any car, is only worth how much someone is willing to pay for it. Am I insane for even contemplating this move? What should I expect to do maintenance wise over the first year of ownership? If I'm going $60k for a '91, should I throw in another $8-10,000 and get a 993TT?
Thanks for your comments.

hmmm, thats a lot of scratch for a 91 turbo. My car only has 33,000 miles on it (and with the exception of the 18 inch wheels on mine, it is cosmetically identical to the car at RPM) and I paid very low $40's for it, so you are paying a huge premium for the very low miles. My car also has an upgraded suspension, twin plugged, etc, so the mods may have driven the cost down a little, but I was not looking for a concours car. Are you planning on driving this car? If so, I might keep looking for a car with a few more miles.
There might also be issues due to the low miles, not that I am an expert though.
The price seems to be close to market, as the 91 turbo at Northwest Investment Cars is $57.5.
At $60K though, I'd save a little more and pull the trigger on a 993TT if you like the body. My wife and I both really like the older looking body style though, so that was why I was looking for a 1994 and earlier turbo.
I had to replace all of my plugs, plug wires, bought new lower valve covers from IA, and did the 30,000 mile service and it is going to set me back right around $2K. Without knowing the service on the car at RPM, for the price, I would assume all the maint. is up to date.

RPM definitely carries top shelf cars but their prices are insane. That 94 he has is awesome but $78k for mint green? The 91 guards red is real nice but $56K plus New York 8.25% state tax plus some mods is pushing 94 territory. How much of a premium are you willing to pay with no warranty . Sloan also carries high end cars with rediculous low miles at high end prices. I would go for the 993TT if the money is there or a high milage (40k+ or so) 92 964 turbo for the high $40's and customize it to your desires. I saw one last january with 30 k miles for about $46k in outstanding shape. Is 16k miles versus 30k miles worth a $10k permium. How many seals are you going to replace with a 16 year old car that has been driven only 1000 miles a year?

I was over there the other day.
Ray seems like a good guy and knows his stuff.
If you like that car, check out the flachbau. It smells NEW.
I didn't look as closely at the 91. It looked nice but I'd be looking for a 3.6 at that price. I have no need for a garage queen.
I am probably going over there tomorrow to pick something up. Can snap a few pics if you want and he doesn't mind.
Cheers.

It is close to
the '94 965 price range......If Ray would take $50,000 it would still be a premium price for a '91 965.....However he is in the "catbird's seat", he owns all his inventory and he can afford to wait
A couple of years ago he bought a '91 965 right up the road from me....I knew what he paid and he priced it as this one is advertised....only had 6,000 miles....I tried to buy it for months at reasonable profit to him.....in his friendly way he said "go pound sand"; But in fairness to Ray, I knew about the car and just dicked around to much...and old Ray bought it for under $45,000

I might go with the more easily tuneable fuel injected 993. It comes with 18 inch wheels and I am sure you could find a nice one for that kind of money.... But that jelly bean car sure is interesting.

Mike,
if you want a museum piece or collectors item, get it! If you're looking for a driver that you might modify, I'd recommend a slightly higher mileage car at a much lower price.
BTW - I feel you can't compare a 964T to a 993TT. The 964T is a "beast", outright dangerous and the 993TT is much more refined V8 like. Also, low mileage alone is not always a sign of a trouble free future.
Good luck!
