Default Texas Smog Regulations?

I am considering a transfer to Dallas, Texas, and I hate to say it but the existence of a smog test for my 965 would be a factor. So could any Texan out there clue me in? Any good roads etc.. in the Dallas area? The office is in the "University Park" area. We don't know a soul in Texas, so any help would be much appreciated. Gracias.

Hi bogey. You will have to have smog test in Dallas. Ruf is located just north of Dallas and they do emissions testing too. I drive from San Antonio (no smog testing here) to get stuff done at Ruf and one time I had asked for them to do a vehicle inspection (required yearly), but was told by Hans that it will need to be smoged......so I waited till I got to San Antonio.

Maybe you should just move to SA?

I am in Houston and have to do a smog test. Due to the rules you have to get the car tested in the county it is registered in. I have to have mine done yearly by my mechanic who switches the muffler for a stock 964 cat and she passes fine.(I am running without cats) Looks funky but does the trick. If you do less than 5000 miles a year you can get an exemption as well.

I live in Wichita Falls. About 140 miles North West. No emissions testing up here. Just got my state inspection done and it took all of about 2 minutes. He drove it around the gas station lot, checked the horn, lights, e brake, and we were done.

All he asked to start the test was proof of insurance.

Never looked under the car. My car is a serious strange sight up here and between the lack of Porsches and my Euro RS right height, I doubt he would have been able to gather much about my set up.

See Ya,

Joe.

Maverick,
I guess driving without cats is I guess not strictly allowed ;-)
Do you worry that people (including cops) might notice? Or would you just say its a sports exhaust?

ttAmericaRoadsterAWD, I thought Bexar county was switching to emissions testing? Have they just not implemented this yet, or is my info incorrect? Hehe, except for my daily I don't think any of my other cars would come close to passing emissions!

I believe there are certain additives you can mix in with your fuel that can help emissions significantly. I am not entirely sure so take this with a grain of salt. I believe one of these chemicals is ethanol, although I am not 100% sure. Does anyone else have some insight on this?

Extremely doubtful anybody would notice or be able to see under the car. Given I have the B&B headers with heater boxes unless they were very familiar with the car they wouldn't notice. It just kills me when I drive down the road and see a lorry belching diesel and thats just fine and dandy but my 2000k miles a year with a car that has a bit high N02 emissions is cause for the 3rd degree!!!

I agree about the diesel. We have the same hypocracy here in the UK. Makes me angry...

Porschefile......I've not heard about testing in Bexar county, though I'm usually clueless of what's happening in SA. I work hard, then play hard and read as little as possible. ;-)

I've had my car smog tested in Dallas, and it passed easily. Although I had the cat on, the numbers were so far within limits it probably would not have mattered. If you take it to a gas station, they probably won't know what to look for on a 965, stock exhaust or not. You can PM me and I'll tell you where I got mine inspected.
