Auxiliary air is injected into the outlet port for afterburning hydrocarbons in order to detox exhaust gas.

I removed mine, it was pretty touch and go. We used a lot of heat, penetrating oil, and Knipex pliers wrenches (which I think are even less likely to slip than flare wrenches) on both sides of each joint and worked them back and forth until they finally came loose.

I would recommend removing them. It is risky but it’s a risk not either. You have to cut the feeder tube out and getting to cylinder 1 is a nightmare. If it’s loose you can get it but if it’s rusted/tight then you’ll need to drop the header which is another delicate matter.

They slowly erode and send shrapnel into the turbine….

Plug with red lock-tight on clean threads. M10X1
DP10X1.0AHYLW. + quality copper washer

Very minimal torque. I forget the exact value maybe 6-8LB FT

One was in the verge of stripping but it hasn’t fallen out yet 3000mi later.

So they slowly erode and send shrapnel into the turbine….does this shrapnel go directly onto the engineer, id so I am sure many owners will not be aware of this

IN your pics have you already lost shrapnel into the engine

Plug with red lock-tight on clean threads. M10X1
DP10X1.0AHYLW. + quality copper washer , are there any negative effect of doing this.
Are these noted onto each head

Penetrating fluid never works for me , so if I cut the lines will a socket fit over the end

Did you heat them first, would ixycetaline be to much heat don't want to melt the aluminium heads

I heated using a propane torch, I too deleted the whole system and installed plugs.

did you heat the head or the plug itself, were yours just as rusty as mine in pic
If one was to break can it be drilled out or can this cause engine damage,
I am in two minds, do it at a later date as currently no problems or now but then risk the car being in the garage a few months as i will have to remove the exhaust and the studs on that also do not look to good

Heat cycle them then just explore with a wrench.

non of mine were that rusty and a few were surprisingly relatively loose.

when installing the plugs a few held very little torque and I could feel them on the verge of yielding.

Use a 1/4” drive ratchet for sensitive feedback feel.

the turbo won’t just explode when pieces go through it. However the edges of the turbine get roughed up. Cost for a turbo rebuild and time spent is probably around $1500-$2500 USD

what route do these take if shrapnel is getting into the turbo, do they protrude into the head, i was trying to find a little more info as to how they work,
It is peculiar, my car has done 61k miles, never driven in the rain kept in a garage yet i have found a lot of the studs, nuts etc to be rusty with the main tin piece disintegrated from rust
