Default Power steering fluid (another thread...)

Hello,

I know there are several threads regarding this question but they are pretty old and I cannot find a final trustworthy reply, since someone changed/filled up this fluid and had leaks…

My Power steering fluid level is low, in addition it has a terrible colour, I want to change it, the procedure is quite simple but I really don’t know which fluid I’ve to buy in order to avoid any problem.
1990 user’s manual suggested ATF Dextron, in these years Dextron has been developed to Dextron II, III etc…

Which fluid can I buy nowadays?

Thank you

Workshop manual suggests Dexron II D, is it still availble in the same composition?

Dexron 3 is fine to use, but don't go beyond that. My Mercedes used Dex 2 in the transmission and power steering, and it's running Dex 3 in both without any issues.

However this specification failed to address a number of issues concerning long term durability such as shear stability and fluid oxidation. Dexron-III underwent a number of iterations in an attempt to address various shortcomings but was eventually replaced by new thinking i.e. DEXRON-VI.

Yes, Dextron 2 or higher. I am using Penzoil Dextron VI in mine without any problems.

Default Pentosin CHF 11S

I believe Pentosin CHF 11S is now recommended:

I went with this stuff:

Quote - "Most early (pre-96) 944, 928, 951, 964 Porsches use ATF (Dexron) as the power steering fluid. It is red in color, and should never under any conditions be mixed with Pentosin CHF11S or CHF202 fluids which are green. Mineral based non-synethtic formula."

Dexron IID should be readily available online. Plenty of suppliers. Just get plenty of it, as when you start the flush on engine idle it does go through it pretty quickly.

My own fluid flush through last year:

Yes, and red indeed. You'll need more than 1L though. Theoretically, unless you're planning to work on the steering rack in the future, you'll never need do this again for many many years. Good luck...

BB964, while I agree mixing fluids is never optimal the Porsche TSB linked in the above PDF states plainly:
"ATF fluid and Pentosin CHF 11S fluid can be mixed. In vehicles produced before the above mentioned VIN numbers,
Pentosin CHF 11S fluid can be used to top off the fluid reservoir. "

Unless I am misinterpreting the TSB, I see no problem in using CHF11s or CHF202 which has since preceded it.
