First, I echo heartfelt thoughts for you & your son, and our debt of gratitude for the sacrifice made by both of you. It is wonderful that you are fulfilling your sons dreams for Talia's restoration. Well done.
I am also interested for those who understand the two third lights. Why & where did these cars receive two third lights? Was it a ROW thing?
Apologies in advance. I've been lurking a bit on this 964 forum. I am sure you guys have already covered this question before, and it is probably common knowledge for you all. But John's story touched the hearts of my wife & I,... so I thought I would ask here.

Steve thanks for your thoughts. The 3rd light on Talia was added some where along the line by a previous owner. You can tell by the speaker wire they used to run to the passenger side tail light.
Welcome and I am sorry to hear of your loss. Thank you for sharing your story and best of luck in the restoration of your sons diamond in the rough! I look forward to your updates.
Thank you very much . When Talia
showed up she had 39,000 on the od she now has 49,000 plus. I live in South Dakota so mainly driven in the summer.
I think someone thought they were a mechanic tried to valve adj gobbed silicone on valve covers tweaked on head bolts ect and it went down hill from there. My son paid around 9,000$ for her
Wow, so it was maybe 4 or 5 years ago that your son bought Talia,... and only for $9k.
I think he must now be VERY happy that his Dad is helping carry that resto torch.
And at $9k, you have a LOT of room to invest (oops, SPEND). That's a GOOD thing!!
And you already have the motor out. Well done John. Keep that spirit going!! Not only does Talia deserve it,.. your son deserves it!! I am loving this.
MUCH support from afar.
And I also like your approach so far. Don't worry so much about the paint. That can be one of the last tributes you put effort into. For now, get the mechanicals up to snuff, and drive her. Get to know her. She will tell you a LOT once you are spending lots of time on the road with her.
Then tackle the cosmetics.
This car already has so much love pouring into her,... the story alone will make her so much more valuable in the future. But if you are anything like I think you are, Talia will probably end up in the family for generations to come.
As Meatball just said, THANKS for sharing your story John!!

The third brake light/spoiler from a 993 cab and is referred to as a "basket hoop". Although they were a popular upgrade from the "ET head" third brake light on a 964 cab, it is unusual to see one on a coupe.
Matthew bought Talia knowing he didn't have time to fix her while still serving. Before Talia left Honolulu Matthew got her to run but kept having problems keeping her running.
When she showed up here in South Dakota that cold Febuary day I was thinking now what do I do. Tried to start her and she ran but badly the rpms going from 300 to 3000 constantly. I had no idea where to start had no idea there were places like this forum to learn about her. I would sit in the garage lost looking at her engine going now what Matthew?
One night around 1am I woke up with the image of Talia's engine bay with some threads on an adj screw shining
It bugged enough to get up and go look and sure enough that is when I noticed it was the cable for the cruise control my first success I thought thanks Matthew. After a few more days just looking and wondering I decided to check the clamps between the manifolds and air distributor and the first one I looked was cracked. Ah ha I thought massive vacumn leak I will replace all the rubber sleeves and boots. Off to the internet I go and discovered this forumn and Pelicans. After some more head scratching cussing all Germans (2 of my great grandfathers were born in Germany) I got them installed and the joy of hearing her run and settle down to 850 rpm had me hooting and hollering crying all at once. She lives Matthew I remember saying.
I will write more later

Of course I had to drive her right away thats when all the oil I had put off to sloppiness while adding oil and or overfilling her started leaking and killing skeeters while driving smoking like crazy form all of it burning off the heat exchangers. Rather embarrassing if I must say but she made me smile. No big deal I thought I can fix those. While investigating the leaks I found the broken head studs and decided time to drop the engine
Great work John, I'm sure Matthew would be happy knowing that you can finish his project. The military inspired me to get my 911 as well, and if something happened to me I know that nothing could make me happier than knowing my family was driving around in that special car. I hope she brings you years of pleasure and a special connection to your son.
