H5 Headlight replacement

With the Bosch H5 headlight the lens and the assembly comes as one piece (on US 964:s).
Until recently you had to replace the whole unit but now several places sells the lens by itself ($125-$150) as compared to the whole unit ($225-$295).
However how do I just replace the lens? (As I said the factory installed light fixture comes as just one piece)
Do I pry it apart and then glue them together?
Didn't get a good answer where I called...
Thanks,
Henrik

Unless you have already bought the lens, you might want to consider "upgrading" to H4's. The total cost (new H4's can be got at $200approx - secondhand H1's are around $320 a pair) then you will need the paintable surrounds etc is around the $400 mark. From this you can gather that I was happy to replace rather than repair my H5's.

I bought my H5's on Ebay for $125 each - Brand New! Some headlights have clips and glue that hold the lens on, others are just glued on. It would be difficult to remove them.
I would replace the entire unit. Actually, I did. I also added the headlight film to protect them.

If you do a search in the archives - someone once did change the glass (IIRC) on an H5 - the post is old - at least over a year and try searching "H4" "H5" and light - see if that helps.

I recently had to replace the H5 "lens assembly" on my '87 due to a rock hit. I purchased the "whole unit" (lens & reflector), and paid about $125 including shipping from EuroWebParts. Check the following link: http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com...Headlight+Lens
Shipping was faster than I expected, as I guess they had the unit drop-shipped from their supplier. Click on the photo in the provided link to show what you get when you order. No need to take the lens/reflector apart - Just put the bulb into the new unit and go. This was the cheapest place I found, and service was great. No affiliation with the company, just satisfied with the single order I have placed with them to date.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to replace a damaged H5's. In my opinion they are awful. Use this as a good rationalization to buy a pair of H-4's. H-1's, if you can get your hands on a pair (unlikely)

Personally, I didn't want to go through the hassle of painting new trim rings to try and get a matching color when installing H4 replacements. Further, the H5's might not be the most popular but they do the job I need them to do day or night.
