Yikes, you'll ruin the sound quality if you have the speakers upside down

OK, I've checked. Mine were the 6000CS (not the 60.5cs), but still 6.5 inches.

The main thing here is that I'm not sure ALL 6.5" speakers will fit. Best to try them if you can.

Hi,

I upgraded my front speakers to Infinity 13.5cm Kappas, and, like Rob, found that the tweeter fits perfectly in the standard mounting if you turn it inside out.

I did find that upgrading the rears to Infinity 6x4" (6402cf?) improved it further - surprisingly so. I'm quite impressed at the amount of bass the rears provide in fact. Need a bit of minor surgery to fit, though.

Dave.

Interesting. I still have the standard rear speakers, and was wondering if it was worth upgrading. What did the surgery consist of?

Cheers

Hi Phil,

When I took the original rears out, I found that years of sunshine (this may not apply to UK cars ) had completey knackered them - so this would account for some of the improvement.

However... The new Infinitys are a of slightly different proportions to the standard speakers. To cut a long story short:

- The shelf holes have to be widened at the ends a little (3mm?)
(note that this is so little, the originals could be refitted if req)

- Butcher original knackered speakers to allow use of original grilles
(you could just stick them on with tape or velcro or something if
you're not as **** about these things as me).

- Drill new holes in the shelf and aluminium mounting rings for the
new speakers. Again, this is not a problem if reverting.

Thankfully, the aluminum mounting rings didn't need enlarging.

I've got some pics and can give you a better explanation if you're interested...

Dave.

Thanks Dave.

Sounds straightforward. If you've some pix handy be good to see them.

Cheers

No roof? That's unfortunate. Did you realise that when you bought it?

Audio Upgrade.

Mine started with changing the speakers to MD Quart component 6 1/4 in front, These have plain grills and do not look very different to the original speakers which was my goal. I left the original tweeters in place but disconected ( need to disconect crossover)

I also decided after lots of thinking that the rear speakers no matter what had to go as they were a waste of time.

Being 12 years old on a back shelf with sun shinning on them (albeit not that often in England)you will find the material in the paper cones may have started to break down.

The trauma got worse when the Hi Fi specialists said I would never get any real bass from a speaker that size. And nobody he know done a speaker this size with grills anyhow. Had to be plain black.

To Sub or Not to Sub was the other question? Having got my Porsche 6 months before the birth of our first child now 19 months old , taking up the rear footwell space would only mean problems in a few years so the Sub idea was also thrown out. ( Fot the moment but I have some more thoughts on that!!!)

After heart ache I decided they was only one thing for it which would mean the back shelf needed to be cut. (Painfull idea)

However again i went for MB Quart components 6 X 9 these have a smaller magnet than many 6X9 speakers and fractionally shallower depth. Again the MB Quart grills look like original equipment plain black ( Just bigger)
Well I am very happy with the sound, better bass from rear so that you then complain again about lack in the front! the look of them on the back does not look anything like my fears had imagined. I would go as far to say i quite like the look now.

If you go for 6X9s it means getting your cut just right as space is tight so get a good fitting shop to do it. You have the rear wiper moter and bits.
Plenty of moulded insulation etc. under the rear shelf. Make sure your choice has small magnet 3" across or less and a maximum depth of 2.75" or less or they wont sit in properly. My car is a 964 turbo. I presume under shelf is the same for all 964s (Well if you want to save time trying out different types at least you know that the MB Quart range will fit)

That Sub woofer idea has not gone away yet as you can never really beat the low bass like you get with a home Hi Fi .
A chap I know, (Gary if you see this post a picture ) got a firm to make two carpeted boxes that it in footwells but match really well. I am thinking that these could be removable. when you need the footwell back!

Sub project still in mind, the spare Amp is sitting under my desk waiting on me to get creative! Have not thought were to put second amp as the main 4 way is under drivers seat and under passenger seat is taken up by car black boxes. (Main central electronics units)

Sorry this is long, but I am a high fi freak and have spent close to 20k on a system just in my boat. I have tried out so many different amp, HU, speaker cobinations is the boat and in my cars its crazy. My garage basicallt resemblies a used stereo shop with all the speakers, components, line drivers, eqs wires and etc. lying around no longer being used.

Anyway, here are my impressions on the various topics.

RE Sub box placement. My C2 sub box is simply held in place by four dowels that drop down into small holes drilled in the back of the rear seats. Takes about 30 seconds to remove it or put it back in. When my 7 and 8 year old daughters want to ride in the convertible, I just pull the sub out. No need to deafen my children anyway. I did not like the idea of loosing floor space and this way I have a spec box.

RE: Image Dynamics ID Max is a very nice SQ sub and can be used in smaller boxes than alot of the 12 inch quality drivers. Not too impressed with thier lower end subs as I have one that is still in its box. I currently use an IDMax, 12w7 and an Eclipse Titanium in various systems. All three are great subs.

RE: Speakers. The best mid priced speakers I have heard and I have owned or auditioned most of the high end stuff are the CDT High Definitions. They make an excellent mid bass driver that is crystal clear with a very flat mid range response up to about 4k. If you want the best, IMO, go with Dynaudio stuff. Focal Utopia are decent, but the lower end Focal stuff has the TN45 tweeter that is horrid. MB Quart QSDs have a great tweeter and cross over, but I like both the Dynaudio and CDT drivers better.

Caveat on the good stuff is that you will have to modify holes with both the Dynaudio and Focal as they come in funky sizes. The 6.5 CDTs also have a very wide basket which may require enlarging holes for normal 6.5s.

My 996 has McIntosh 406 HU, McIntosh 446 6 channel amp with each channel separately powering (2) Dynaudio 7 mid bass, (2) Dynaudio 3 inch mid, and (2) Scan Speak revelator tweeters. A McInotsh electronic crossover is used to seprate the frequencies. I use a Brax mono with the 12w7 in this system and it rivals all but the very high end home stuff and gives my Martin Logan Krell setup a run for its money as far as clarity, transparency, imaging (Revelator as good as it gets in a car) and an ultra flat frequncy response requiring absolutely no equalization.

MY C2 has 2 PG Titanium amps, Nakamichi MB 100 HU, 2 sets of MB Quart Qs (6.5 front and 5.25 back) and ID Max in the ported box in the photo. Sounds decent, but am changing out one amp with a McIntosh 444 and the front speakers this weekend (Dynaudio driver with MB QM 25 tweeters and MB Comp X crossovers). Still will not be as good as my boat system or my 996 system though, but it will sound decent and be loud enough tohear when the top is down.

Hi,

This is what I did with my rear speakers to retain the factory grille...

Just cut 90% of the original (knackered) speakers out just leaving the surround, and then screwed the whole lot through the shelf. The original grille then just clips over the top.

Would probably work with most other speakers which don't come supplied with grilles, too.

Varied. Played classical guitar for about 12 years and am still into classical, but I listen to alot of hard stuff and alternative type music. My problem is being obsessive and never satisfied. I have wasted so much money on trying to save money and later upgrading systems. Amp wise, been through Zapco, Arc Audio, PPI, Orion, Pheonix Gold Titanium and Tantrum series, Diamond, Alpine, and now I only satisfied with McIntosh for highs and mids and Brax for subs. The list of speakers, head units and probably cables and speaker wire is just as long.
