Default Starting Issue

G'day all,
I have a problem with my 1990 C4 which started a couple of months ago, when I turn the ignition I hear a click from back there somewhere, if I turn the ignition off and on then wait a few (10-15) seconds it may just click again, or it may start no worries.

The wait can be 10-30 secs sometimes!

I had the starter motor replaced about 10,000km ago.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas regarding relays I could check etc, maybe its the DME? Maybe its the starter motor solenoid?

Or should I jsut head to the dealer or auto electician?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Cheers
AB

Was the starter replaced with a rebuilt one or a new one? I had an issue with a rebuilt starter out of the box. I ended up getting a new starter and seemed to fix my issue.

What Duck said.
Make sure the ground straps, battery and starter, have good connections, check for power to the solenoid, small yellow wire, sometimes that connection can come loose. Then while you are under the car, have someone turn the key see if you can duplicate the "click no start" while you hold a grounded test light on the solenoid wire. If you hear the click and the light comes on when the key is turned, but no start, then your starter is caput.
Then buy a NEW one and be done with it.

Thanks for the replies, I checked and cleaned all connections, still get the click no start. Then it started ok 6 times, then click no start, and its getting good power as confirmed with multimeter.

So replace the whole damn thing or just the solenoid?

My thoughts are get a new starter especially if yours is original. I had good luck with the new 996 part (I believe it is 99660410702). I tried a remanufactured 964 starter with not good success, though many go for the remanufactured model and they have worked.

Ok will do a bit of a search around, pretty sure it's a rebuilt one in there now, typical it's the only invoice I can't find. (10k km ago)

Sorry, let me check what part number I ordered. Images on parts websites do not look correct.

From what I see 996 604 107 02 replaces 996 604 107 00.

When I was looking, I found a thread on a forum that said they were not identical in dimensions to the 964 part number. The one I got looked darn close and had no issues installing. Car started right up.

That looks like one for tiptronic transmission. Is that what you have?

no not tip, so probably not that one!

this is the ticket... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Starter-P...gAAOSwo6lWM5kg

costs just as much to ship it down here as it does to buy it!
