fitted a 996 starter to my 964, after a lot of swearing and scratching my head, got it in. The hard bit was the top hex nut, next to impossible...

thanks again for your help Duck.

heres a pic of the old on right, new on left - and the car starts like it should.

Wow! Mine looked almost identical between 996 and 964 part.
