Default Secondary Oil Cooler - thoughts

Looking to add a secondary oil cooler as the car is getting tracked more.

I've searched the posts and web and have come up with a couple of options as I want to keep the A/C:

FVD - Seems a bit pricey but looks like a good solution. I've read many people have used it with good results.

http://www.fvd.de/us/en/Porsche-0/-/...ithout_AC.html

Patrick Motorsports - Seems a bit more economical, but I'm wondering if it will provide the required cooling. Does any one have experience with this?

http://www.patrickmotorsports.com/pa...ystem-with-ac/

Thanks

B

If you're a decent fabricator a setrab oil cooler can be added in front of or behind the condenser. If not, Bill's option above will save you some major headaches.

Would you guys consider a second cooler a requirement for a car that is tracked a decent amount? Stock motor.... Ambient temps can range 65-105

Might have to put this on my list :-)

While we are at it. Who has a good 2nd oil cooler kit that replaces the ac fan?

Thanks Bill V. I was kinda wondering if the Patrick was too small and the FVD seemed about the same size. More $$$$$$$$!!!!!!!

I have a good fabricator but this seems like the "easiest" solution.

Any thoughts on a transmission cooler?

Spyrex - I'll let others add but I think if you're tracking a 964 a 2nd cooler is needed.

How accurate is the stock oil temp gauge? Is this one of the gauges with a huge dead spot in the middle that once the needle starts to move you are already in the danger zone? Do you need an aftermarket sensor to get a real reading?

Accurate. It's not a dummy gauge. 2nd cooler is a must for regularly tracked cars.

Is the consensus here that the larger one that goes next to the ac condenser the best option? Does anyone make a center cooler option?

Last cooling question (sorry op for crapping your thread) does the stock trans need a cooler ? Track sessions are 20-30 mins for me....

The kit Carnewal sells can be used w/ or w/o the CA components, there is a similar kit that is only for use w/o the AC components. When in doubt buy the AC kit then you are good to go either way.

Here are the additional major parts to install an oe right side Setrab cooler on the left side where the AC is oe
BAT #s
#AF30AN12 Metric m30x1.5 female to -12AN adaptor.........need 3
#AM30AN12 Metric m30x1.5 male to -12AN adaptor..........need 1
#T180-12 180 degree bend -12AN hose end.........need 2
#T150-12 150 degree bend -12AN hose end.........need 1
#TS-12 Straight -12AN hose end.........need 1
#FC3-12 -12AN Aeroquip braided stainless hose..........Need 18 feet. You can probably get away with about 14 feet but I'd just rather have more than necessary than end up a foot short.

The plumbing on these is more awkward than the Carnewal kit(Ruf also used to sell this kit, it was developed by PMS for 964Cup, 964 3.8RS etc). oe the I/O ports are on the top, The kits have the I/O ports on the front where they are more accessible.

I bought the Carnewal kit after waiting 3 months for Ruf to get one, The Carnewall kit was in my hands in a few days from the order date.

The kits include all the brackets, hose connectors etc, a true bolt on.

Patrick Motorsports also sells a kit with the full size OEM oil cooler. You have to fab your own mount on top of the AC cooler.

Before adding more capacity, make sure your existing cooling capacity is working as designed. Make sure the oil cooler is clear of debris and buildup that might be preventing airflow, make sure your bumper sealing wedges have not disintegrated (these force air coming through the bumper to be routed through the cooler rather than around the cooler), make sure all the bumper baffling is complete, and make sure your thermostat isn't being lazy.

^This. Replacing your OE cooler with a new one can lower your oil temps enough to make a difference. They used to be pretty cheap, but not anymore...

There isn't enough room in the center section of the 964 (and 993) bumper for a center mounted oil cooler. Nowhere for the hot air to escape.
