First time 964er!
Hello All,
First time rennlister.
I just purchased a 1989 C4 964 with a newly rebuilt engine with receipts $22k.
Im coming form an Aston Martin Vantage V8, and BWM E92 M3 track car.
Previous Cayman S owner.
Ive always wanted to own an older model air cooled 911. I am totally new to the community and this car. The car is still in florida and waiting to be shipped to Cali.
I wanted to say helloo and thank you for all of your board contributions. I will be digging through all the knowledge to start my minor build.
By the way, does any know this car? Previous owner on the forum?

It was listed on ebay for $48.5k. Not familiar with that seller or the car. Did you get a PPI? Looks nice in the pics!
Welcome to 964 ownership, you'll find it's very different from the other vehicles you've owned, like analog vs. digital.

As stated by others $22k was the cost of the recent engine and tranny rebuild.
It was an even trade for my 2007 Aston Martin Vantage V8 with 35k miles and plenty of upgrades (kw competition, wilwood brakes, tune, intake, V12 skirts, rsc lightweight flywheel, and race clutch. ) So, I would say the trade was probably valued ~48k or dealer price of $44kish. I think i lost some value trading the Aston but i really wanted this car since it had the fresh engine and its in great condition. I have wanted a 964 since i was in highschool 20 years ago. This is my keeper. Probably my final car.
Here are some pics of the car i traded in for it:

Nice Vantage!
I have been contemplating buying a 2009 Vantage, so I'd love to hear your thoughts about performance and cost of ownership, if you don't mind chiming in about it

I'm from CA and just legally reimported a 964 from Toronto, Canada. Did you make sure the car is a 50 state legal car? It will say so on the under side engine lid emissions sticker. Some of the early 89-90 964s had both 50 state legal versions for those originally sold in CA and 49 state versions for the rest of the country which were not legal for sale in California when new. All 1991 and newer 964s were 50 state cars. Just the 89 and 90 cars had 2 versions. Given how strict CA has become, the DMV might not allow, or will give you a hard time when you try to smog and register a 49 state vehicle in CA. Best of luck!

Welcome biggynuts01 . another +1 on the PPI. A sight unseen purchase especially to trade a cool car to begin with would be a good thing. If it ends up working out enjoy the 964.

Thank all of y'all!
Great amount of info that you all provided. I never new there were different ca emissions built cars in 89-90 for the 964.
I getting a PPI. I will let you guys know how that goes and if/when the car arrives.
What do you guys think of the 911 2.7? I found a nice one for sale local.

The Vantage is a very nice car. Its definitely a different level. Its very quality built. Even the oil fill cap is machined billet aluminum that looks like art. All my friends are at awe when i take them for a ride. You can tell the car was hand built (good and bad). Its a car that gets a lot of looks and tickets.
Cost of ownership is $$$ but not $$$$. Its about the same to maintain as a lambo but less than a ferrari. Do the work yourself and save. The dealer wants $1200 for oil change, $1700 for an ipod cable, $2000 to replace wheel hubs... Those are real quotes from Aston Martin Newport Beach.
Performance wise the car is nice. People say its slow but its really not. Its geared to cruise. Its just that the engine is not peppy like my M3 or my old cayman s but its not slower. My car runs toe to toe with my friends V8 R8. It feels heavy although its not that heavy ~ 3500lbs. I would say its more like an AMG car. The car has good balance since it is a front mid engine. The engine sits behind the front axel.
My car with LWF and race clutch and tune made it much more fun to drive. In fact if i kept the car I was gonna go shave weight by li-ion battery, titanium exhaust, and race seats bring the car down to 3300lb which should make it much more fun.
Its a great car to take to dinner, or daily drive.
