Spell check ... Looking for Consensus....

Getting ready to visit a few local Indy's for maintenance.....

If top Indy says, we need to do engine drop/install for various seal replacement or problem solving. I am curious as to what others would baulk at regarding labor hours for just the step of drop/install on a quote? 10 hours, 12 hours, 16 hours?

I know when focused, 2-3 hours drop, 2-3 hours back in very doable for the superstars.... Thoughts?

My shop once charged me 10 hours to drop the motor.

10x185= a decent lift
10x185= an engine hoist and all the tools I would need to rebuild my own motor.

It's too much money. But if you have to, have at it. Once you have a shop drop the motor, you open the can of worms and spend too much regardless, so make sure to get in there and get all the stuff you don't want to touch again. And don't forget to replace your fuel lines. You don't want a fire.

The first time I dropped the engine in my 964 turbo it took me 8 hours and I didn't know what I was doing. The second time it only took me 4.

I guess if I think excessive, I can call them on it and if they won't be fair, I can always walk .... Not the outcome I'd want ....

Just make a plan with them going in, so you more or less know what to expect. Make sure if a shop is going to touch your car, they have had plenty of 964s in their hands before. And the just get done what needs to be done. But always have a base plan, or you'll go nuts...

Never blame a shop for being expensive. Blame an owner for not knowing...you know how it goes...

I love my shop. But they charge so much that I do 90% of the work myself and hand it to them when I need someone with 30 yrs experience.

Hmmm... my mechanic charged me 8 hrs drop and install. So I would think 4 hours each?

But he does have well over 30 years experience... closer to 40.

I'm okay with 8 hours on that part of a job.

Stay tuned...

Ask what the factory shop rate is. Any Porsche mech has the factory shop manuals that give the anticipated hours it takes for a particular repair.
