If your in the US east coast especially I have a full front diff/ tranny, main drive shaft and front half shafts if you need them from a 90 C4 in good working order at somewhat reasonable pricing.

@ Cobalt - I am based in the UK so shipping could be difficult. Thanks as I work through this it might be an option to investigate further.

@klr10 - Thanks for sharing, yes I saw that on ebay. So could I use the transfer box off of it?

The car is with the indy...he has confirmed it is definitely mechanical and sounds to be coming from the gearbox. He had not come across this before and has been going since 1987. They are going to do some more investigation and give me an update next week.

They electronically disconnected the 4wd and it is still making the noise. Didn't know you could do this...

I spoke with cogs cogs and they can supply a planetary gear and they would Tig weld pins before shipping, its not cheap but cheaper than a new one in UK. Price in UK is approx £1500 for a new one.

I will have more news early next week. Thanks for all the help. Whilst I am getting this fixed I might look at getting the other niggles (oil leaks) fixed. In for a penny in for a pound

I'm thinking a lot of C4 owners are wondering about this. Perhaps you could ask them how they do it!

I have a complete C4 transmission available and a fair selection of spare parts, let me know what you need once Steve has taken a closer look.

With work commitments etc I was only able to get to Steve Bull today to discuss next steps. They have confirmed that it is not the hydraulics and his thoughts are that it is in the transfer unit, but they were waiting on my agreement to drop the engine. So no more news really, thanks for asking I will update the post as I hear more.

Their 964 specialist had not come across this before, I mentioned about the planetary gear and he had not seen this issue but thought that it could be this. His view was that as soon as we get it apart it will be obvious what the damage is and then we agree next steps. Might start another thread as there is a 964 C4 gearbox for sale as posted in the thread that has an LSD. I was wondering if we could make one good gearbox from them both and I could then either keep the original gearbox or upgrade to LSD which might be interesting.

The other thought is that whilst the engine is out it might be worth looking at a top end rebuild or a reseal as it likes to leave its mark on the drive. It seems a shame as it drives fine but the car is a keeper, has 106,000 miles and whilst I am paying the engine drop labour is it worth getting a top end rebuild done, new clutch etc as it inevitable will need to be done. Decision decisions....

All 964C4 transmissions have a unique LSD on the rear axle, the pre-load across the plates is controlled by the lateral hydraulic cylinder mounted on the RHS of the differential case.

No problem. I did not get the message, probably best just to send an email, but take it as read that we will have everything you might need.

What is previous and present history on flywheel? You know that clatter & knocking on DMF failure is common. What was method to determine Diff is knocking?
