As an update Steve Bull were still pulling the engine when a second hand gearbox has come up for sale. Plan is to just swap the box rather than try and figure out what's broken. Advice was this was the cheapest way to get the car back on the road. I will have the gearbox fixed and swapped back when it has a rebuild and funds allow. Thanks for all the help. I also purchased a second hand planetary gear for a good price against new just in case that was the issue.

Picked the gearbox up when I returned from holiday. They've been busy at Steve Bull and with the change of plan re using second hand box it has gone to the back of the queue. They are planning on cracking on with it next week. The box didn't come with a warranty but it comes from an L90 member and I feel confident that it is in good working condition. It was removed as previous owner changed to 2WD and 6 speed 993 box. I have the planetary gear so when funds allow will have first box looked and will update accordingly. Thanks for the help and support. Still not sure to what the total cost will be but just keen to get it back in the road and drive it again!!

Sorry should have updated the thread. My specialist installed the second hand gearbox in November. That was a bit of a challenge as I didn't ask when I purchased the box it was from a 91 car. With my car being a 90 when Steve bull came to install they realised there was an issue with the feed for the speedometer. On 91 cars they take the signal from abs sensor I believe rather than from the gearbox. Steve came up with a plan and swapped the various bits from old box to new box and reinstalled back in the car. It's working fine but I still haven't got around to finding out the issue with the previous box. A job for another day....plan is to have a rebuild at some point in the future and when I do I will have the original box repaired and reinstalled in the car. A story for another day.....

So back again, you won’t believe it but I am now having the same issue with the replacement box. Have done only 2 track days and only a few k road since the new box. I never got around to fixing the old box but did buy a load of parts from another member on here that changed c4 to c2 in the U.K. Bought the parts just in case I ever got around to looking at old box. Includes planetary gear etc. To many other commitments at the moment so going to have to take off the road and investigate the old box in the future!! Can’t believe how unlucky I am, can’t deal with another £5k bill.

Hi Rabs,

Im so sorry to hear what happened to you. I've recently encounter the knocking sound and I just picked up my car 3 weeks ago from a transmission rebuilt. I wonder what are the chances of me having the planetary gear failing?
