FWIW about twice a year I detail the underbits of my C4 with an acid brush and CorrosionX.
I should put up pictures of my GF's '05 Element engine department vs. that of my '04 CRV. She's got rust everywhere; I have almost none. It does get dirty, but underneath that is clean metal.
