964 production years
The differences in the 964 from '89 to '90-'94 are easy to see but I've heard that '92-'94 are even better than the '90-'91. Is that true? What are the differences year to year? Looking for a C4 manual coupe. Thanks

I wouldn't say that 92-94 are better years than earlier years. Besides production numbers being considerably lower for the later cars they are the same car overall except for some minor updates that included revisions to the climate control, clutch components, coil springs, oil cooler thermostat, and I believe the air conditioning coolant was updated in 93 from R12 to R134a. Also, mid way through the 91 model year the cylinder head was designed to include a gasket.

They are all 911/964's. Although in 1991 through 1992 considerable changes and modifications were made. I am currently building a 1994 RS clone from a 1990 C4 and I am shocked to see how many parts are left over from the earlier carrera on the 1990 that are not compatible with parts from the later builds. Some of the changes are significant and others just a PITA trying to make one work with the other.
Other than the commonly known cylinder head, Dual mass flywheel and aero vs flag mirrors I have come across what has to be close to 100 different parts revisions. Everything from Wiper blades to calipers were modified in one way or another. The rear parcel shelf, rear seat release mechanisms, indents in the tub to attach the rocker panels and countless little changes were made. Many of these were carried over to the 993. So there is a clear divide in the cars under the skin but as far as driving pleasure you can't go wrong with ether.

In 1996, it mattered whether you bought a 90 or a 92. In 2015, you look for a car with the right service history and good ppi feedback.
20 years later, anything that was a problem should have been fixed and 9 times out of 10, the later parts where applicable, were used. So there is no real difference btw the first two years and the second two years.
If you are buying a car with 15000 miles on it to show your friends how awesome your super clean, never driven Porsche looks on your living room floor....absolutely buy a 92 or 93...
If you are looking for a 964 to drive, buy the best one you can find, relative to cost.

Cobalt, May i Recommend you to start your own podcast to fill us in with the knowledge you have? I told Pino about the brake line clip. He had no idea what that plastic clip was.
I believe the most noticeable difference between early cars and late cars are the rear suspension top mounts. I actually like the early car hood and engine lid latches better. they look more cool

Two pot to four pot rear brakes was a major change.
Early cars spoiler mechanism was operated manually from inside the hood, not on the dash as in later cars.
Aluminium inlet trunking was changed to plastic. Does anyone know if this was a cost cut or a weight saving???
There are loads of little development changes through the 'evolution'.

Mines a 1990 C4 and it has four pot rear brakes, center console spoiler control and a front hood safety release.
My understanding for the air intake is that the switch to plastic in 91 was made for both weight savings and to reduce costs. I suspect that cost was the biggest factor as the weight diff is minimal.
