Happy New Year all! It has been a while since I've messed with the car.

In October I led another week-long tour of Tasmania. It was a successful trip and we are already planning the next one.

Just after Christmas, a mate sent me a link to a set of well-priced BBS LMs in 964 fitment. I didn't let that opportunity pass. So the wheels arrived last week.

BBS LM 18x18.5 ET56, 18x10 ET50.

Playing with reverse mount faces on the rears (probably won't fit because I like my alignment settings). Doing this pushes the offset to about ET 38(ish)

Face-mount (ET50):

Reverse-mount:
ET38:

Plan is to disassemble, repair and polish lips, and paint the centres in BBS gold. BBS does not disclose the colour-codes, so next weekend I'm picking up a mates gold E50 face to do a colour match.

Goal (thanks @gtee ):

Yeah. I was lucky to have a mate in Melbourne go check them out for me the day after they were posted. Committed on the spot once he confirmed they were good.

Whoa...
Go Rusty.
All we need now is Peter Bartels, Dennis O'Keefe, Don Tryhorn, Peter White, Jim Rolfe, and Ed Aitken.
I wonder where the 934, 2.7RSR, 924 GTR, 916, and pink 959 are these days?

Sorry to hijack your stuff, but thanks for the memories!

Ok, so I still don't have the wheels on. However, the engine has come out for a major service. This time around we'll be doing some cosmetic work on the engine as well. Powdercoat engine tin, resto the fan housing, new fan on the way. Plus adding rocker-shaft seals, crankcase breather gasket, new brake pads all round and bleed.

I've obtained an engine under-tray. Judging by the grime on everything, I'm tempted to use it...

Media blasting is fun....now off to the power-coaters...

The parts clean-up goes on...

The torrent cleaner & media blaster kick ***. Also...powercoating has come back..

I opted for a new fan as well (Rose Passion AUD$300 less than The Bird!!), so this one (not perfect - you can see some surface cracking in this pic), will be up for sale soon.

Next up:
  • Install RSR seals on the rocker shafts
  • Valve-lash adjust
  • Usual major service items (fuel filter, air filter, oil filter, dizzy, spark plugs, ps fluid etc)
  • Timing chain cover gasket
  • Crank-case ventilation gasket
  • Repair crank position sensor (damaged plug)
  • New heater pipe vent tubes (to tail lights)
  • Servicing injectors
  • Repair torn clutch slave boot
  • Replace cruise control rod (keeps popping off!)
  • Rear brake pads & brake bleed
  • Reinstall Engine
  • Reinstall Engine under-tray to keep all the crap from going all over the engine and gearbox!

Ok....so my parts were trapped in Australian customs for over three weeks. But they all got through.

Also...plated bits!

Next issue: on re-assembly, it looks like the bolt holes on the fan housing are warped enough to cause interference with the fan. So....new housing ordered.

Nevertheless, we made some progress yesterday:
  • RSR seals installed on rocker shafts.
  • Valve adjust, valve covers reinstalled with new seals and a bit of liquid gasket.
  • Brakes done (still need a bleed)
  • Torn clutch slave boot replaced.

Also, I tried to install a Rothsport steering rack brace. No way does that fit on there. The external lines just would not allow it to fit. Not just moving the lines out of the way, but the connections themselves were in the way. So I'll be selling that brace to anyone that's interested...

(Sorry, no brace in this picture, but the connection in the middle of the rack was right in the way).

All good. Even light wear. No pitting on rocker faces. I use mineral penrite oil.

I had two of the rockers replaced 30,000km ago-ish.

hows your current project going?
