The valve is straight up a one-way valve between the oil tank and the engine, reducing oil settling in the cylinders and blowing smoke on start-up.

Couldn't find an online install guide for the 964, but this is it for the 911. Slightly different due to the location of the oil cooler, but you get the idea.
