964 C4 Melbourne
Hi all,
New to the forum and Porsche.
Like many others, I've come from an Audi background.
Last month I purchased a 964 C4 that was advertised in QLD and bought it sight unseen based on discussions with the owner and his two mechanics.
Details of the car from the PO are as follows:
- Bilstein Dampers with Eibach Lowering Springs Car lowered to RS spec
- Cup 2 wheels with Yokohama Advan tyres
- Braided brake lines
- Cup mirrors
- Steve Wong strut brace
- Fab Speed Max Flow Air Box Cover with BMC Filter
- Carbon RS Heater Duct
- Secondary Muffler Bypass (G Pipe)
- RUF suede steering wheel
- RS Flywheel and new clutch
Marine Blue exterior is 8/10, few scratches and some light chips around the rear fenders.
Interior is Linen with blue piping and a dark blue dash.
My girlfriend and I flew from Melbourne to Brisbane and road tripped the car home to Melbourne (1800km), with overnight stops in Port Macquarie (NSW coastal) and Sydney.
Car was brilliant on the way back, despite the Eibach springs, more comfortable than I imagined, the sound intoxicating when above 5k on the highway on ramps.
Previous owner has done a great job on this vehicle, my plan is to keep up the hard work and bring her back to as fresh as possible.

The clear indicators are not to my taste but thank fully, all OEM parts were included in the sale and first job last night was to revert back to stock.
Cracked headlamp lens replaced (more difficult than I thought)
Shortly after purchasing the car, the odometer stopped working.
After some online searching, I found the following DIY which gave the probable cause and great repair instructions.
http://p-car.com/diy/odometer/
The problem is the teeth on one of the small planet wheels get very soft from the VDO oil and break off.
You can see my broken tooth here
I ordered the part from a company in Sydney and once it arrived, began to pull apart the speedometer as per the instructions.
Was not too difficult although it was very nerve racking. Should have taken more photos sorry.
You can’t tamper with the mileage without going much deeper into the brains of the odometer than these instructions take you. I was going to wind the clock forward a couple of thousand so the reading would be accurate but I was unable to.
Unfortunately the part the DIY said I would need was too small for my car (I needed a 20 tooth medium gear instead of the recommended 15 tooth small gear).
The local supplier did not have this part and no other repair shops would sell me any parts.
With the speedo in pieces on my desk at work, I bit the bullet and bought from the States. The $25 part then cost me another $36 USD to ship.
The new gear fit and I was able to reassemble the speedo. Took it for a test drive before final installation and back to a working odometer.

I hired a Rug Doctor (carpet shampoo'r), to give the Linen carpet a shampoo.
For less than $40, it was worth a shot given the $240 quote I was given from a detailer.
The Rug Doctor even fits in the back with the seats down!
I removed the front seats and was disappointed to only find $2.40 and a paperclip.
Before shots
After about 4 hours, I was happy with the results and seats went back in.
I'd say it was an 80% improvement.
Rear seat carpet is still a little ratty so I might look at replacing these in the future.

Was never a fan of the Cup II wheels and something about the Carrera decal never sat right with me so last week I did something about both.
Picked up a set of Cup I's and had them refurbished and removed the Carrera decal.
Some better before shots first:

Looks like this car found the right "next" owner.
An 1800 KM trip home... perfect way to get to know the beast. You're off to a great start.
Love the color, very sophisticated on a 964.

Great purchase.
I have the linen interior as well, looks similar condition. Great job on the cleanup.
I picked up my Stone Grey metallic C4 and drove it home 2400km.
Great bonding experience.
enjoy

Thanks JV, us mere mortals do what we can compared to your epic build!
Thanks very much!
They are the Italian made Mille Miglia reps unfortunately.
My mechanic had them sitting out the back collecting dust so purchased and had them refurbished.
It's for the radio!
From what I hear, the radio reception in Australia was terrible and Porsche Australia received plenty of complaints. This was a modification done by Porsche Australia before delivery to fix the poor reception!
Thank you very much. I feel the purchase procedure was an interview by the PO to ensure it was going to be in good hands. I'm thoroughly enjoying bringing him back to factory fresh!
Thanks mate, much appreciated!
Thanks mate.
It was done by Porsche Australia to fix poor reception issues. As far as i know, all locally delivered Australian cars have this additional antenna.
Thanks mate. I wasn't sure about the Linen until I saw it in the flesh.
I will be trying my hand at a Dynamix Dies leather kit to freshen up the leather soon, will report back with the results.
How is the carpet around your back seats?
Mine has discoloured due to the factory glue.
Glad to hear about other experiences bringing the car home over the long distance, was certainly a great trip and fantastic way to get to know the car!

Sourced from my mechanic and refurbished.
The PO of my car sourced the Mille Miglia Cup IIs from 'Tuf Options' in Moorabin Victoria.
They might be able to set you up with a set of Cup I's. Price of the Cup II's were $2,500.
Design911 has them for £799.00.

You would need to obviously factor in shipping, GST and Duty.
