Aaa and the animosity comes from both sides.

Crazy thing is, I bet the vast majority of our street driven porsches combine a bit from both camps. Hell I know mine does.

A porsche lowered to the point where it handles like crap = poser
A porsche modded for the track but can't hit an apex = poser

A porsche lowered to the point where it handles and hits an apex = priceless....

Mr. Alex,

I went through 2 different sets of coilovers before I was happy with the way my car drove. I also added and refreshed some upgraded bushings ball joints etc along with the last setup. Our roads in California aren't made of silk. Maybe there's a better setup than you are currently running too.

So I came across this old article on 'Speedhunters'.
Read first: http://www.speedhunters.com/2011/10/...t_porsche_964/

Now I'm sure some of their articles are articles, but this is one amongst other ones I have read is just poor. There's just absolutely know insight into the car, nothing on the actually modifications made. How is this a 'car spotlight' ? By reading this article I haven't learnt a thing, except that apparently taking overly pornographic pictures of a car constitutes a pretentious significance that requires an article.

That aside I dislike the word 'stance' when it's used as a buzz word. That's not a 'stance'. Here is the definition of 'stance' - it took me 2 seconds to google.

stance (stns)
n.
1. The attitude or position of a standing person or animal, especially the position assumed by an athlete preparatory to action. See Synonyms at posture.

So by definition the word 'stance' is relative to the optimum performance attitude, position for an athlete. How is a car that is scraping it's **** on the ground got 'stance'. If this is it's 'stance' in 'preparatory to action' is it preparing to slam into a speed bump. If a car is an athlete this is not the most effective stance.

I think the word 'slammed' is much more appropriate.

Another 2 seconds on google,

slam 1 (slm)
v. slammed, slam·ming, slams
v.tr.
1. To shut with force and loud noise: slammed the door.
2. To put, throw, or otherwise forcefully move so as to produce a loud noise: slammed the book on the desk.
3. To hit or strike with great force.

Which aptly refers to the attention seeking nature, shock value, 'wow', controversial reaction a slammed car covets.

The author also uses the phrase 'A Functional Porsche 964' as part of his article title. How is this car functional? Why, because it has a cage and bucket seats? Does that give it some kind of functional credentials? The very core of a car is in it's capability to move forward. How does this car move forward? Surely the fact that it is indeed slammed means it can't get over speed bumps. Functional you say?

So the elements of a slammed car,
Stretched tyres - reduction in performance due to less contact patch and stress on transmission due to reduced rotational diameter by having a smaller aspect ratio.
Negative camber - reduction in performance due to less contact patch, increased tyre wear, poor geometry giving poor handling.
Low ride height - there is a height that negatively effects the functionality.

It's one thing to have a slammed car - to each their own. However to proclaim a slammed car as functional IMO is truly absurd. Is this what we call functional cars now a days?

Had the article been 'One slammed 964' with insightful journalism into how it was achieved that would be fine. Surely readers of that article want to know how low it is, what cage is inside, what camber, tyre size, wheels, offsets, J etc it was running? But hey, a scenester wouldn't want other to know how he achieved his look. Then that would be a piece of journalism.

There was a time when an article was about how a car performs - not just about the way it looked.

Slammed cars are fine - I just wish that 'scene' (there's another word I despise) would just say,
'Yeah its purely about aesthetics.'
Stop having prententious illusions of what's 'fresh' by secretly changing wheels every 5 minutes (for a big car show reveal) and photographing overly zealous HD photographs of the results.
And finally misconceived views of functionality.

Instead we have HD pictures of a car at a show with a title that apparently redefines the definition of a functional 964.
Shame because clearly a lot of work was put into this 964 - PS. loving the wheels.

Want to read about a 'Car Spotlight > A Functional Porsche 964' read this one about a bunch of functional 964s,

Yup I was at Players. And indeed Mr. Payne, Kristof, Glassup are lovely blokes - in fact they've come to a few L9O meets. Whilst I think they're cars are too low, I'm sure they think mine is too high.

I went to that show, to see what it was like - because you can't judge a book by it's cover. And it was exactly what I was expecting. Not that you were there but I got bored and went on track... sadly I cut the day short as eventually stretched rimmed cars came on track, including an Audi on air ride that ended up on it's roof...

So yes, I tried the car 'scene'. I tried a proper contemporary car show and no I don't enjoy spending all day looking at static cars, sitting in picnic chairs. I'd rather drive em.

I appreciate the effort you low riders put in to your cars, but I'm sorry I can't stand for overzealous HD photography of cars at shows, buzz word decals, stretched tyres, sudo internet journalism and wheels that get secretly changed for each show.

It's a Porsche: Their damn philosophy is built on form follows function.

Just remember your sense of humour, because the rest of us have to laugh and be understanding.

Errr... that's the ride height I use everywhere.

LOL... a picture of Todeshandlers car at the Nurburgring is nothing more than a parade lap for a JPG. I've been there, and unless you're on a private day it's unpleasant and you can't experience it. Mind you the car park was full of V-Dubs who were just there for pics.

And yes I am childish. In fact I'll probably never grow up When I see bate hanging right in front of my eyes, I can't help but bite.

So why are you so upset that it took a new topic here on RL to get it pooped out? You have mag covers and ink. Plus all the other stuff you make sure to point out to us. You're riding on a cloud made of ******* and the main focal point of this scene. Literally and figuratively of course. Your geo is perfect, your tyre sizes are aggressive and you buy lots of wheels that are in fashion or rare. Quit pouting like a little kid.

I have no magazine cover. The 964 community has a mag cover. These articles are about 964 owners for 964 owners. Why? Because they're informative, proper journalism.

I'm not upset fella, theres humour in my original post. You don't even find it mildly amusing?

My geometry will never be perfect, but you know that since you're a pro. I've tweaked and tweaked it over 6 years of ownership and it'll never end. However for those reading this, it came back conclusive that a C4 is perfect with zero front toe following a really good geometry thread I can't find the link to right now.

If you wish to pick me out individually. My threads serve two purposes,
1. They document the history of my car. Should I ever wish to sell.
2. I attempt to be as informative as possible within my amateur capacity. I like to hope I've given as much info as I've taken from Rennlist. Not just posted pics of my car.

I'm not quite sure what that means - probably because I was actually dropped on my head as a baby. But tittie clouds sound awesome! Focal point? Doubt it very much, there are so many jaw dropping cars all over this forum. So much awesome inspiration constantly. If there is a focal point in this forum, it's that these cars are finally getting recognised as awesome driving machines, perfect balance of new/ old and that 964 owners are really known for being real performance modifying geeks. My only agenda is to give back to this place and promote 964s as much as possible.

Fashion? Fashion! I wouldn't call BBS mags a fashion wheel or speed lines? BBS are so popular here because they're so damn light. Really delicious on B roads and track. And in hindsight yes, I've embarrassingly bought too many wheels in the past. Anyway I needed the cash so sold them. Just wanted a set of track softs and one for normalish summer tyres.

I think Rotiform wheels are in fashion.

Maybe if I was reading about the fitting of a close ratio 6-speed box with LSD, biased pedal box or lightweight parts I'd probably be thinking go.

I'm sure Frank would disagree and hope he doesn't care how I view his car.

Maybe I'm alone in thinking show, maybe I'm not but to be honest it shouldn't really matter as both show and go guys are modifying their cars for their own pleasure and to stand out from the crowd.
Well that's fair enough. But I'm pretty sure the guys would disagree - my 964 gets properly thrashed. In fact sometimes I feel guilty about just how much I beat on it. You wouldn't believe the pain we put our cars through recently during an Alpine tour.

Filming - it's purely about promoting 964s. As a side project I use the L9O & my car as a tool to promote them, I'm an ad man, it's all I know.

I'd love a 6 speed - but the cost is prohibitive and I actually really like the C4 transmission. Light weight, I'd would absolutely love to have composite panels and windows but again it's a step too far ££££ and it would make the car impossible to live with on Alp tours. As for the interior - I'm redoing it to shed weight. I'm gonna ditch all of sound deadening, the rear gubins. Manual window winders and I'm debating whether to get rid of the stereo all together. The car just weighs way too much atm in comparison to the other Rennlister cars I've driven, especially the C2s!

I'm in awe of the proper LWT 964s here. KaiBs is an obvious example of just how awesome these cars can be.

Cheers.

I am so old I didn't even know what V-Dubs was so a bit of googling brought me to the VW ads of 2006

.... Throughout the commercials, Wolfgang appears with his blonde assistant, a guest, and the guest's pimped-out vehicle. After insulting the automobile, he then "un-pimps sie auto" by destroying it, and replacing it with a 2006 Volkswagen GTI ....

So now I am almost upto date with the plot & cast but where is the Blonde assistant?

Freedman - shame I missed the Palace gig this year. I only live 5 mins away and always enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of a motorsport event in the heart of London. Just (only just!) too young to have seen racing at Crystal Palace in the 60s.

Yes it was a really nice event, with a great atmosphere. More 964ers should do it. It would be a great day out

Frank, that car you linked on Speedhunters was subsequently broken for parts IIRC (no idea why)
