Coming around to keeping it really plain and letting the red colour do it's job like this one.
Love the dial and position - plus with your car being red it's a nice accent - just make sure it's a matched red.

Cut an access hole in the guard... Perfect access to the bolt heads. The one with the spanner on it required the inside panel to be nudged to allow the bolt to unscrew so it was never going to happen without this treatment.

And now that PITA job is done. Now to procrastinate about the left side... There must be something more fun I can do in the mean time.

Congrats Doug. A grinder is one of the handiest tools you can own for FYI IMO. You will use it many times again.

Its really coming along now. The panel shop will have a breeze.

If you haven't already get rid of the inner guard positioned water tank for the window wipers. I see you already have the smaller RS one in place which you can use for that purpose.

Yes, a mate of mine called me back and said the same thing. Furtinately he didn't answer when I called as he has one and I would have borrowed it instead of buying one.

Re the washer bottle... Now that's an idea. The small one is for the headlight washers but the big one in the left guard takes quite a few litres of [heavy] water. Hmmm.... Food for thought, plumb the windshield washers to the headlight washer supply. Is this what they use in the RS?

Next job is to reconmect the left wheel to the steering then to reassemble the right front wheel suspension and steering so we get her back on all 4 wheels.

Yes that the common mod for 964/994 owners. You benefit from already having the smaller tank there where as I had to install it and rip the old one out. I never use the headlight washers. The 964/993RS did not have headlight washers...gets rid of another motor some plumbing and a large plastic box that is usually full with 3-4kg of water....less weight more "go car"

One advantage of removing the guards is we can deal to the tiny bit of surface rust caused by moisture sitting in the top seal area. Compared with other rebuild blogs, Lola's surface rust beginning here is pretty minor. This is the only sign of any rust anywhere I've seen on this car thus far. She's obviously been parked indoors her whole life.

^^^^^ good excuse to try out the wire wheel on the angle grinder to clean up the guard join area.

Been thinking a lot about a serious repaint, exterior, engine bay, frunk. We will be pulling out the engine and fuel tank anyway.

Dave, how much longer do you reckon until your cat exits Europacific?

Left wheel reconnected to steering rack with new rubber boot, right side, new fittings connected and new rubber boot fitted. Bit of grunting involved until I found a succesful technique using a bike tyre lever to stretch the boot ends over the rims that seal them.

Then the strut and wheel carrier reassembly and fitting. Off to Motorsport racing test now so that will have to wait until I'm back. (Little preparation apart from skim reading the manual so I may fail yet - not a priority right now)
