Guys, please this is not a $10k rebuild. Pistons and cyclinders alone have to be at least $5k, then labor (what about exhaust and cams?).

Agree that it's very misleading to write that this is a "$10K plus" job. Yes, $20K is in fact more than $10K but "10K plus" is so off the mark that it's laughable.
My 964 engine's being rebuilt now and my bill is estimated to come in at around $16K for a stock setup ($12K in parts, $4K in labor), before taxes.

I have a silly question:
I have been reading for the last several years that a 3.8 conversion is a waste of money unless one goes to dedicated MAF/engine management, yet this rebuild is P&Cs, cams and a chip. Stock intake.
What gives?

3.8 is about the synergy - the sum of many little tweaks that makes the difference. On it's own, it ain't really worth doing. I would guesstimate this engine puts out 300 - 320hp max which is totally achievable with a 3.6, although I'm sure the torque figure is higher due to the increased displacement.

So, if my P&Cs and cams need changing, it is a worthwile investment?
Background: due to the strict laws in my country, the engine MUST look std. MAF and custom anything is a no-go.
But, if I actually get something out of "invisible" mods, the game is on.

Three Wheelin'
George, this is why I've kept mine UK registered.
The Swiss system is a car enthusiasts nightmare.
A friend of mine with a very nice anniversary 3.2 had the car registered here 10 years ago.
it had up rated brakes fitted 2 or 3 years before he imported it and it had past all the inspections etc.
Sold it to a guy in Fribourg, who made the mistake of asking his local inspection office about the brake upgrade and they said it would fail as they are not part of the factory spec.
Thats an expensive mistake.
Unfortunately, it means that many of us end up breaking the rules in one way or the other.

Great video Larry! (I know you are lurking on this forum...)
The video shows that you really need to put some though into a rebuild, so you get the car you want at the end. (Starting all the way back with getting the right car for your needs.... a C4 for Larry's winter driving thrills). That consultation session with Spencer before the build is a great example of quality of the shop doing the rebuild. That, and how immaculate it was. Clear communication with the customer.
Notice Spencer's engine break-in routine! Give gas to 5,550!

In his video on track, Matt states that Larry has "...about $70K invested" into the car, which means the rebuild and upgrades done at the time probably cost at least $30K. A C4 with 120K miles can't be worth more than $30K. However, I was wondering about something else: Given how much Larry has invested and how meticulous he is, why would he repaint and reuse that old rusted engine tray and shroud? In one shot I could see the edge of the metal is paper thin, badly pitted and full of holes. It can't be for originality sake as he's used many aftermarket parts.

And the rest! Pistons and cylinders alone are $5k and that FVD exhaust is 4k (euro!)
Videos involving matt farrah rarely provide and meaningful detail nor doesn't he explain how the car handles and rides, ergonomics, build quality etc etc. Compare onf of matt's videos with that of chris harris and the difference is chalk and cheese
Still for less than the cost of 2 coffees a month I've subscribed

I didn't mean the Matt Farrah part, but the teardown and build up of the engine. I'm also a big Chris Harris fan, keep missing him when he comes to shoot segments down in their office in NY.

I think all air-cooled /DRIVE videos need to be done by Chris Harris. Matt Farah also did the BBi Autosport G-model 911 video and I felt like he isn't well enough in touch w/ the air-cool world, at least not at much as Chris Harris. Chris Harris has owned air-cooled cars, he had Tuthill Porsche build him a bespoke 911.
