Another 64 restoration
Instead of beginning with tearing the car apart I decided to start with the wheels on this one, like the look of Fuchs but want them bigger so decided to make my own using genuine centers and BBS RS lips and barrels.
Offsets and lips still to be decided but currently using what I already have to mock something up and see how it looks on the car, started out cutting a wheel apart on the lathe and machined both sides to locate the barrel and lip.
Wasn't all that complicated really other than my lathe being a little small to machine wheels, once the rim is cut off it becomes more manageable.

Thanks, I'm an engineer by trade and the lips / barrels are std BBS parts.
Using the genuine centers means you'll have very strong wheels as factory wheels
are forged not cast.
Next I'll paint strip the black off and detail one just to see what it will look like detailed,
also looking in to getting slant lips with a deeper dish.
Going for a backdate on this car but since I'm using 993TT brakes will need 17"wheels.

No harder than any other wheel, the lip and barrel locate on the center and can't move around.
The 34 bolts are just there to bolt the wheel together.

I struggle to visualize what the wheel looked like before you lathe'd it up that allowed you to machine that perfect lip on the center that allows you to mount the front and rear barrels.
Any ideas on what the final width and offset will be, front and rear?

The plan is to bolt this one together, the BBS barrel and lip I have makes a 17x9 but most of the width is in the barrel so my guess is 17x8.5 front and hopefully 17x9.5 or so on the rear.
A lot depends on first test fit but essentially the current lip and barrel are mainly for proof of concept right now and once I know what widths I need I'll order those.
My goal is to have the rim as flush as possible with the fender which is the reason I'm making 3 piece wheels, that way you can make the exact offset you want.

People have been doing this with the Mercedes Barock wheels, but it's considered highly unsafe as the integrity of the wheel is compromised by lathing them apart. Yes, they're made from genuine pieces, but that doesn't mean they were engineered to be used in such manner. I would be very cautious about running these, but very cool project nonetheless.

Here's a thread w/ pics of those Benz wheels being converted.

Pretty interesting. I didn't know this was possible. I definitely like the look of the final product. I guess something like this could also be done w/ a set of D90s or some 16" Cup wheels?
