Throwing a post up like this and getting 6 people telling me it has a checkered history is a lot easier than paying for a PPI from a local who is probably already buddies with Fabie and may or may not give me the real story. I've had issues with PPIs missing things before whether intentional or not. If the replies were more mixed, I'd take it to step 2 but it certainly doesn't seem worth it.

Yes, I also did that for a while until I found most of my time was being spent in the 6-3.... The GT3 is immensely satisfying when you get it right. Now I'm enjoying a completely different co-experience in an 11 Spyder. Now that's a hoot to drive, seriously amazing. Anyway, I realize I'm on a 964 thread here, so just wanted to reminisce a little. Cheers guys!

No doubt there is a connection between the 964 and the 6 GT3. The engines still carry the 964 prefix and are quite similar in many ways just add 4 valves per cylinder a few hundred rpm and water jackets.
The spyders are quite nice. I was pushing for one but the wife won out with the one button top down of the '15 BGTS. Lots of fun in a different way and easy to get power out of them.

It's also one of the reasons I think the 964 has staying power. Porsche accidentally made a whole generation of GT3s and just happened to sell them in low numbers.

I had a 2005 GT3, incredible car, much more raw that I would have ever expected a more modern 911 to be. The difference to me is the 964 has a performance envelope that be used on street for the most part- the GT3 needs to be used on a track to explore it's limits.

If the 997 GT3 was going for 996 GT3 or close to 964 money, I would seriously consider one. Just can’t do a 996 GT3 for looks (love the wing design though) and it’s dash design, but totally repect it otherwise. Mega car.
Maybe the day will come where you can trade a really good 964 for a 997 GT3? That might put more 964s on the market? (Mine?!) The spirit of both is close... but like Phil mentioned above, them there’s the issue that the GT3 might not be as fun (on the road).
Having both would be ideal...

I recall when the 6-GT3 came out and the factory suspension settings were all screwy. Car did some funky things out of the box but once that was all resolved they really shined. I think this hurt the initial sales. I like the 6-GT3 a lot as a driver. I am currently helping build a 3.8 conversion 6-GT3 Cup Car engine and it should be one heck of a car on track, although I am sticking with my 964 3.8RS widebody for track duty. The twin turbo engine I am building should prove to be a blast and a decent match for the cup car. Looking forward to spending some time on track against the cup car. The problem I have with the GT3's on the street as said is they really open up when you hit triple digits and I am afraid I will get myself in a lot of trouble if I went down that path. Although my 964 turbo is a bit faster it is equally as much fun around town as it is at speed I just don't drive it enough anymore. The C2 is still my go to fun car although ITB's and some upgrades would be nice.

I don't know how you can compare a 964 and 996 for the way they drive. I know this is a thread or another time, but I have had both 964s and 996 track cars. I have also had both 964 cup, 993 cups and 996 cups. The differences is more than the similarities. The 964 is so much more visceral. It is truly the tail wagging the dog. It is a great driver's car. A 996 was a little more refined and easier to drive fast. You didn't have to worry about the oversteer as much. I really think that every new generation of 911 has refined that a little more. When I went from a 964 cup to a 993 cup, the difference in the suspension was huge, as well as the way it handled power.
For what its worth, I did track time in street versions of each also and felt the same way after driving each. Bottom line, they all drive a little different based on the geometry of their suspension. It's not just because the new versions have more bhp, it is also because they car has better suspension that helps lower the lap times.

I have driven the regular 6 on the track and the cup version, not the street GT3 version. I am not saying any thing negative about the GT3 cars, to the contrary, I think they have been an upgrade to the older 911 in the way they track.
