Default blower replacement

Hi,

i need to replace my LH front blower as it squeaks.

Now I have found the write-up from Roly for this but because I have AC it is impossible to do this from the top it seems.
I need to remove the firewall to get access to the blower.

Anyone out there that knows the procedure ?

Thumbs up

It's easier than you think. Just unscrew the clamp near the left wing/fender that holds the A/C lines, and then the other clamp just below the center of the windscreen. Now you can carefully push the lines away from the windscreen and just pull the fan straight up between the lines and the windscreen.

Hi

Not sure if there is some confusion her as the picture shows the blower motor located on the left hand side of the engine bay.

But i think the original question was for a LH front blower as it squeaks.

Regards

Rob,

The picture does show the LH front blower - not the blower motor on the LHS of the engine bay.

Thanks,

Roly that was what I was looking for.

I've came as far as the expansion tanks removal and the fuse box but put everything back in as I was worried that I also had to remove the fuel tank .....

Could you mail me the manual piece to my email account so I can print it?

Thanks!

Toon,

Right click the image and you will see a menu. Click Save Picture As... (or similar depending on which version of Windows you have) and save the images. Then print them from whichever application you use.

Hi Toon,

could you give us an update please. Did you experience any problems during the replacement? I have A/C too so I was wondering if what ThomasC2 said is true.

Greetz.

Eagle,

I haven't done it yet, but during my first try it didin't seem that easy as ThomasC2 is suggesting as it would be faily impossible to get the clips of the fan housing and remove the housing itself as I cannot get rid off the AC lines, even if I have removed the clamps that holds the lines in place...

I'll get back with my findings when I've replaced the blower.

Hi Andrew,

thanks, the pic shows a car which is identical to mine, same color etc. but it isn't my car on the pic.
The color was a special color only available in that year of production (option # ?). It's dark green when there's no sun, but when the sun shines on the car there's a light green coming from under the dark green, it's really nice, but you need the sun to see the special effect.

Hi all,

as promised I'd keep you updated when I would replace the LH front blower. Well I've finally come round to do it yesterday.
The whole process took me 5 hours to do.

I've followed the outlined steps from the workshop manual as posted by Roly.

I can assure you this whole operation is not an easy task.

1) remove carpet in fron of car.
2) undo battery connections
3) remove cover on top HVAC system by unscrewing the 2 screws and removing the rubber strip.
4) undo hose clips from fuel expansion tank and unbolt the 3 bolt from theis tank and remove tank and lay in front of fuel tank.
5) disconnect the 2 fuel hoses on the LH side
6) remove fuse box cover
7) remove triangular shaped cable cover on the right from fuse box
8) remove central electrics and lay on piece off cloth on right fender. This has the tendency to slip back but I secured it with a piece of string to the mirror.
9) remove screws on firewall (3 on the far left and 2 on the RH side as part of the fuse box) and the bolt on the bottom of the fuse box)
10) disconnect the central connection on the HVAC and the 2 connections that go thru the firewall. one below the fuse box and one on the left.
11) now you can remove the firewall with some fiddling about.
12) undo the 2 clamps that hold the AC lines in place, if you have AC that is.
13) remove clips from fancover that secures it to the housing
14) slide of the fancover off and wiggle it passsed the AC lines by carefully holding them away.
15) undo the 2 Torx 20 screws from the blower in the 1 and 7 o'clock position. Herefor you need to move the fan to align the access holes.
16) the next thing I did was to cut all the plastic pieces that connects the actual fan to the blower shaft. This created a bit more room as I could remove the fan (not yet the blower still) (hey the thing was going to be replaced anyway!!!)
17) with 2 screw drivers I unclipped the clips in the 12 and 6 oclock position ( again after aligning the acces holes first) and the my girlfriend could pull the blower out. I tried half an hour to unclip oone and then turn it a bit and then do the other clip but that didn't work. Also themethod with the 2 srewdrivers didn't require the special tool and that saved me Euro 70.
18) disconnect the electrics from the blower.
19) connect electrics to new blower and place new blower back into it's position
20) put everything back together again!

I think I can do it now in half of the time, so if anyone in the Netherlands need some help with this .....

The blower costed me Euro 190 from the OPC here in The Hague.
One nasty thing - my airbag light stays now on but will have that reset on Monday on my way to work.

Roly thanks for your piece that you wrote on this subject and posting the parts from the workshop manual, I couldn't have done it without it!
